idling noise

i wish to ask, when your car is at idle, do you hear any noise from engine or its quiet??? i was told by a shop, that its normal to have the idle noise, rattling noise in da head engine. when driving, the noise dissipates...any ideas???

There is no rattling noise from my engine when it's idling, but mine is a 6 cyl.

The best place to check it is at the dealer whose service dept tells you that it's the norm. Just ask them to start one of their 320 demo cars or another 320 in the workshop. If they sound like your engine, then it's the norm. If they don't, then you know what to say, right?

It's a matter of courtesy mate.

BMW engines are the most refined among all marques and should sound very sweet. If yours doesn't, there's something wrong. Go to a dealer or outside BMW specialist to check why. Do a search to find threads about outside speciallists.

You may bring your car to obermaier, jalan Ipoh for a health check. I did mine last time.Check with Mr Freddie, he is E90 sifu.

Mine is E90 320i 2006..17km mileage.....have the same rattling sound like trrrrrrrrr....according to my dealer that normal for 3 series....due to timing chain he said...the sound gone if rev to about 2.5 RPM.....

Appreciate if you could give details location of that obermaier w/shop....I need to get their opinion as well.

Im new here , but been into e90s for a while now.

I work at a BMW specialist as the workshop manager, and do a bit of DIY on my own E90 318i

I joined up here because there isnt that many E90 forums which focus on the 4 cyl N46 / N type engine

Regarding the rattle noise.

The chain tensioner on the earlier models is a weaker design, and is worth changing.
I had a similar "tapping" before i change the tensioner. The sound was gone directly after replacement to the newer item

chain tensioner, hmm wher ecan i go get dis changed? do i walk in n jus tell them that i need my chain tensioner replaced? some mechanics will get offended,,,

any friendly mechs dat i can up to and tell them i want to get my chain tensioner replaced? does anyone know how much it cost?
