I bought a re-cond E-46 imported from Japan last year. I was told by the used car dealer that it was made in year 2000 and the same was printed in the car registration card. When i sent my car for repair and the mechanic plugged in the computer system to check some details, the computer indicated that the year of made was 1999. Can someone confirm to me the year of made of car?? If it is year 1999, what would be my recourse??Thank you.

If it is year 1999, then the car is 6 years old when I bought it. But they were selling it as a 5 year old car.

Why dont you confront the dealer? You can even refer this to JPJ.

Dear Aramis,

Can I conclude that the year of made shall be as recorded in the computer?? In fact, i did ask the salesman after i discovered that, but he couldn't really explain why.

Anyone has such an experience before???

If the year of made was 1999, I would surely take it up with the dealer.

In fact, the AP stated that they are only allowed to import cars NOT more than 5 years old.

Please visit this site. All you have to do is to enter your last seven characters of your chasis number. It will tell you almost everything you need to know about your car.

Hi guys,

typed in the last 7 characters of the chassis no but not able to search. It says invalid data.

What do i do next???

VIN=Vehicle Identification Number=Chasis Number

The last seven characters normally consists of:

- First two characters should be alphabets.

- The last five should be numerals.

Tips - a '0' could be mistakenly entered as 'O' and vice versa.

Try again bro.

yup, he's right, try few times, sometimes i get error as well (it means u didnt type correctly as what funfer_fahrer mention

Managed to trace the details. Apparently the PROD. YEAR is July 1999. But the car registration card printed as May 2000. The same goes to the AP.

Can someone advise why the details are different??? Have I been cheated by the dealer/importer????

There are a few other ways to confirm the date of manufacture. Try the following:

1) Try to find the seat belt orange tag right at the bottom. The format should be mm/yyyy.

2) The security code printed at each window. It should read something like this xxxx34xxx, where '34' means year 1999, '35' year 2000, '36' year 2001.

FYI car made in the last quarter of the year may be consider for the following year car due tot he long holiday and year end at the ori plant. So when the car arrived in the destination country it will be declared as the year of arrival and Jan /Feb 2001, this is the std that being practics by some car manufacturer. Fot ur case it is the same coz 1999 and 2000 have no different on th car spec unless 2002/2001 they have facelift+spec change..

tkew,

I think there is some confusion here. There is a difference between "model year" and "date of manufacture". For instance, my E39 the "model year" is 09/2000 indicating the first date of the face lifted model rolled out of the factorty, whereas the "date of manufacture" for my car is 02/2001.

tkew,

I remember the salesman told me something like that. But shouldn't the year of manufacture be the date when the car left the factory?? In my case, the car took about 10 months to reach its destination or the car was kept in the plant for 10 months before leaving the factory (from 7/1999 to 5/2000).

The question is I might have paid for a 5 year old car but in actual fact it is 6 year old.

Based on the computer data, the car is definitely 6 year old when I purchased it. Not 5 year old as advertized by the dealer.

If that is the case, I have to go after the dealer for compensation.

edk,

For registration card purposes it is ALWAYS "date of manufacture", BUT when you send the car for computer diagnosing at AB for instance the "date of manufacture" will NOT be indicated. The "model year" instead will be displayed at the diagnostic report for customer's reference. Reason being they technical guys are more interested in the "model year". "Date of manufacture" doesn't have any purpose. If you hand over your car key to the Customer Service Department they have a special device to tell the "date of manufacture".

Note: "model year" be should be at least equal to, but not later than "year of manufacture".
(i.e, there is no such thing as "model year 09/1999", "date of manufacture 07/1999")
