Opened the door to the Petronas Paddock suite and was greeted with this ugly mug...

#83. It's Bernie Ecclestone. One of the richest man in the world and owner of Formula 1. GULP....sorry for calling you ugly, sir. When I'm 70+ , I want to be just like you. :D

I was soOOoo hungry, I grabbed all the food I could get my hands on and proceeded to gulp them down with no regard to the other guests' looks. Heheh... I was also soOOoo hungry, I forgot (again!) to shoot a picture of my plate before eating it. No point shooting the plate after. :D

#86. But I did remember to shoot the dessert though. Phew...

Ahh... A full stomach is a sleepy stomach. Sleepy stomach means a sleepy Exarkun. Zzzzzz....

Oh wait, the final Paddock Club Pit Walk is about to commence. Grabbed the D300 and started walking to the entrance of the pit walk.

Interesting fact to the picture below. Tony Fernandes is Air Asia founder and CEO. He's taking time off from Air Asia to help get Lotus Racing off and running.

Little known fact, Tony Fernandes used to work for Richard Branson, owner of Virgin Racing. They are apparently 'frenemies'. He worked very briefly with Virgin Atlantic as an auditor, subsequently becoming the financial controller for Richard Branson's Virgin Records in London from 1987 to 1989.

TF path is quite similar to RB's path, with both owning or running a record label and owning an airline company.

They've also made a friendly bet that whichever team beats the other, the boss of that team has to wear the rival air stewardess uniform and SERVE on a flight. WahAahAHAHhAAHAH!!

“He has an airline, we have an airline and if we beat him he can come and work on our airline as a Virgin stewardess. We will make sure that the stewardess outfit is perfect. I suspect that he might ask us to reciprocate. I’ll have to check how fetching his stewardess outfits are but I’d be game to do it while totally confident of winning,” said the Briton.

AirAsia boss Fernandes replied: “Bring it on, the sexier the better. Our passengers will be delighted to be served by a Knight of the Realm. But, knowing Richard, the real challenge will be to prevent him from asking our guests ‘coffee, tea or me?’ That would be scary,” he said.
The Bet.

After the final Paddock Pit walk, the guests all filed back up to respective suites. Me? I dumped my bag in the suite, went to the toilet to empty my small bladder and then prepared to go to the roof.

Cars were leaving the pits to go to the starting grid.

#108. What's with me taking the rear end of Renault. That's twice already!
avi1010.jpg

#109. The BBC crew of Eddie Jordan (former team owner), David Coulthard (former F1 driver) and Jake Humprey (former childrens program host). I find them and the BBC Commentary team of Martin Brundle and Jonathan Legard to be much better than the idiotic Steve Slater of Star Sports on Astro. That's why I watch the BBC coverage via their website and not Star Sports.

#110. Felipe Massa on the way to the starting grid.

#116. AND IT'S A GOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
avi1115.jpg

With no refuelling this year, the action at the pits was very minimal. Most cars came in for one stop to change their tyres. Some did come in more often if they've damaged their cars or tyres in any way.

#117. Red Bull Racing Pit Wall, where the geniuses ensured the team's victory at Sepang.
avi1133.jpg

I was literally twiddling my thumbs up on the roof. To make matters worse, Michael Schumacher retired on Lap 10. I was sooo looking forward to get his pit stop. I guess the other professional photographers were also dissapointed. They started coming up to the roof around lap 14.

I quickly chose my spot and stuck to it. Thankfully, the photogs were not too rude. They left me space for me to shoot as well. Thanks guys!

#118. Jenson Button coming in quite early for his new tyres.

#119. A closer look.
avi1158.jpg

TBC.

#120. Heikki Kovalainen coming in after damaging his left rear tyres. You can see it in the picture.
avi1175.jpg

The no refuelling also meant that each pit stop takes a much shorter time to complete. What used to be maybe 10-12 seconds per stop now only takes about 5-7 seconds. That's how fast they changed the tyres.

I was running all along the roof together with the other photographers to catch the action. Some actually fell after slipping over someones discarded water bottle.

I was huffing and puffing all over the roof. So unfit of me...

#121. The rarely used air gun. :(
avi1174.jpg

#122. Nico Rosberg coming in. Experimented with slow shutter speeds.

With the race over, I followed the others to parc ferme. They tried to cross over to the Perdana Suite side of the roof (where the Prime Minister and King are located) but was denied by FIA security. I only managed to snap shots from the furthest point they allowed me to go.

#140.Not an ideal shot of the three winners. Part of the building was obscuring Nico Rosberg's Mercedes, but that was the only angle I could find.
avi1535.jpg

#141. Mark Webber congratulating his team mate. He was on pole but lost out at Turn 1 when Vettel got the better of him. From then on Vettel just stormed all the way to the finish line.
avi1554.jpg

#142. Vettel climbed onto his car after getting the congrats from Mark Webber and celebrated his first win of the season.
avi1567.jpg

With that I went down to the Petronas Paddock suite and sat down. I could not cross over to the Perdana Suite side to catch the podium celebration. For that, the TV in the suite will have to do.

Took a whole bottle of mineral water and finished the 1.5 litres of ice cold water in record flat. I was up there without a sip of water from 4pm to about 6pm. By the time I got back down, I was parched as hell.

The guests were starting to leave and they announced that the suite will be closed at 7pm. I slowly gathered all my stuff, pack them up in the bags (my camera bag and the Petronas bag) and slowly walked out. On the way, I saw the traffic was already getting horrendous.

What to do now? Brave the traffic?

Nah... I walked to the Photographers Area and again 'sneaked' in. Security was not too tight anymore. FIA was getting ready to pack up and dismantle all the equipment to be flown to Shanghai, China.

Opened the door and were greeted by equally sweaty and tired looking photographers. Some in the OFFICIAL SIC PHOTOGRAPHERS room were just staring at their computers, the ceiling, the wall, etc. Too tired to even talk.

I plonked down at the nearest seat and also stared at the wall. What a day. Blazingly hot but infinitely fun. Thankfully the rain did not come or I would have been confined to the Petronas Paddock suite and shoot from the big window.

A Formula 1 weekend is always a special weekend for me. To be able to cover the race at the roof was already an awesome experience. But thanks to the generosity of the people in the room I was in, I managed to cross off one of my wish list.

After about 30 minutes, some food came into the room and the energy of the photographers rose back up. Some began editing, some joking around and playing the fool. I opened up my tiny netbook and began off loading the CF cards haul into it. We all began ooohh-ahhh'ing each others shots and laughing our asses off at the goofy shots of each other we took. We slapped each other's backs whenever we get the 'awesome (to us that is)' pictures.

I gave some of my shots to the SIC Photographers for them to use. A thank you for letting me experience what they did for a living. After all, they are just pictures.

At about 9:30pm I bid farewell to the others, thanking them for the experience and told them it was a blast.

Slowly walked to the PO parking area (no more shuttle back to PO after dark) and drove off.

Got home, took a shower to wash off the grime, sweat and dirt, plunked onto the bed and promptly fell asleep...reliving the day in my dreams...
