Just changed alll 4 disc brakes due to severe juddering when hitting 100km/h..where can I cross drill the discs..and how much is the cost.Thank you.

Will drilling the discs affect the rigidity? Are cross-drilled brakes & normal brakes made from the same grade of iron/steel?

well just an options to more expesive drilled ready disc brake ?

I just feel the car travel way too long after I hit the brake......drill the discs may improve braking distance..........

the old discs were severely damaged....maybe because of hard & late braking at sepang F1 outings.......

Maybe cross drilled brakes are more expensive because of higher grade materials used? I heard that sometimes the discs will crack after drilling, coz with the holes the rigidity is less. Engineers on the forum, please clarify!

Drilling the disc will put stress on the disc. I would not recommend it. Better to try to chg to better hgh performance brake pads like the Pagid or Ferodo's. Good competition pads will improve braking but it tends to squeal a bit.

What pads are you using?

IMO pads from JURID are pretty good, but that is for my e21 AFAIK

Perhaps you might want to try MINTEX (not MINTYE), EBC, and other higher performance pads before doing the cross drilling.

The idea of cross drilling is to allow the gases that form under extreme braking conditions to escape. It does not really confer significantly more friction.

Also, check your brake booster - could be leaking.

You could upgrade the brake booster to the one from the 7 series, e32 etc. Makes the biggest diff.

Good luck!!

Guys,

I will advise AGAINST drilling ur disc as a DIY......drilling ( = removal of material ) changes the balance of the disc, induces warping & cracking if the distance of the holes are too close.

If you want to improve the brakes, there are other options - pads, lines, or factory drilled/slotted disc.

Out of curiosity, how damaged were the old set & do you know why they were damaged at Sepang?

Mintex pads - the CTech M1144 costs RM700+, but I heard they are very good. I have the brake fluid, also M1144, costs over RM100 per bottle (I think 2 litres). Have not installed yet, coz I don't drive fast no more (not the E34 anyway). May install on the Kookaburra or let some monster machine try it. Alvin, interested to install for next track day???

Don't fool around with your brakes, your own life is at stake!

Jules raised another good point:

Brake lines/hoses.

Go for stainless steel braided hoses. Definitely makes a diff.

911 Zentrum does the PRO-RS steel braided hoses.

If there are sufficient numbers, minimum of 10, the owner is willing to give discount on the regular price.

Just bought a set for my Citroen - 4 pc set, for RM290.

Six piece set would probably cost about RM390+, check it out at

911 Zentrum

They also do cross drilled and grooved discs

Jules brings up another important issue. After drilling, will your discs be sent for balancing? What if they don't balance? Are you going to drill more holes? You certainly can't add weights like wheel balancing.

Been there done that! Wasted a pair of Zimmerman discs. Anyway, any machine shop will be able to do it. I paid RM80 bucks if I remember correctly. I would suggest you explore other means to increase your car's braking power

ichiwan2,

I bought the 6 line ProRS at 911 for RM310. Very good value for money.....to replace my 22years old ATE lines! ( which is still good surprisingly.....externally looking )

bundy...u terror-lah!

Event the standard Mintex is good. CTech should be better, so long as you have the moolah to cover it. Personally, I think its over-kill to have it on a road car. If you intend to take it on the track, should have it for track use only.

Have found EBC blacks tend to be less effective when cold. Improves when brake temps go higher. I think the same applies to all other performance brake pads.

EBC - comes in Black, Green, Red or Yellow

oh i c.....BMW dun need that! so maybe the price i had is valid.....for those keen, pls ring for Jeff Khaw / 911Zentrum

bazet,i strongly discourage aginst drilling stock vented discs as this will hav adverse effects on ur braking and the durability!
trust me,i've also been there and done tht!

spend ur moeny on ur FRONT disc if you want to upgrade ur discs......can suggest ATEs which are slightly better than stock. If money less issue...Black Diamonds and if really $$$ no issue....upgrade to bigger disc. ( Alvin's territory here ka ka ka )

since bazet already bought new ones......use them 1st until the next sepang outing-loh.....ya, u still no tell us how ur disc died after going there!

cheers!
