The other day, met a e46 owner. He mentioned that the N42 engine is "problematic". Why he said that?

I read on some forums (include here) that others have also made the same comment.

Please sifus to advice me if I should buy a car with this engine.

Not exactly problematic per say but more issues as compared to the M54 engines in the rest of the E46 lineups. You gotta take note of the valve seals which normally wears off & causes abnormal consumption of engine oil & white smoke. Other than that, there are the solenoid valve seals, vacuum pump seal and rocker cover gasket. Mostly oil leakages issue. Plenty of info on the web. Search for N42B20.

Beside that, N42 is the first batch valvetronic engine. Valvetronic also giving some problem.

non of these problems are actual problem if BMW do not insist on their "long Life" oils policies. most problems starts with oil leaks, harden rubber caused by "vulcanisation" due to oils turn acidic. if we are diligent in oil changing and do flush out the gunk and sulphuric residue, maintain the hydraulic integrity of all the seals.. there is nothing wrong with the engine.

15K oils change just screwed everything.

Alan, you are right. It's the extended oils service that caused these problems. I have an 2002 E46 with N42 and only genuine 102K kms. It runs perfectly and had none of the issues that many people encountered like white/blue smoke, engine rattles, sludge etc. My pre-purchase check with Auto Bavaria reveals that the previous owner only did 2000 kms in first 5 years of ownership. Despite the very low usage, he serviced the car every 6 months. Thus this has avoided the prolonged oil service of 20-25K which was the norm then.

Wear & tear maintenance parts like thermostat, water pump, LCA bushes, absorbers will require the same treatment depending on how one drives the car and what maintenance schedule is put in place. it's just like any other BMWs.

E46 N42 are getting very cheap due to "wrong perception" that the engine is problematic. If a good one do come by, I wouldn't mind picking up another unit for my other daughter. 1.9, 2.2, 2.5, 2.8 or 3.0 all have their own share of problems.

The tip is to have regular oil service 7K - 8K kms using good quality semi/fully synthetic. Note : never allow the mechanic to put in more than it's necessary. Keep the oil level between the marks indicated in the dip stick. In my case 4 L will be sufficient and no top up required until the next service. Mechanics like to over fill thus charging you more. BTW I also don't have any problems regarding topping up the radiator coolant. Just make sure to inspect those hoses every time that car is serviced.

Parts for parts, N42 do cost more than those with M43 or M54. It's a BMW, so if we are buying one we just have to be prepared in maintaing it like a BMW.

If just only oil leakage from engine is very small problem for all kind of BMW valvetronic engine. I been informed that this problem is due to the aluminium screws. These aluminium screws need to change time to time. Once you change gasket must change the screws as well. If you want to solve this problem is very easy just change the screws to stainless steal screws will solve the problem.

Agree wit all the sifu advise here, I had mine N42 problematic before. Just change all the valve seal and the oil leakage solve. Valve tonic change once also now everything go smooth. Just hav to maintain it every 7k oil change n check all the water holes. Good car to drive outstation feel more safe compare to others japs car.

No aluminum screw in my N46.. Almost identical to N42. The only bolt that need replacement are the block mounting magnesium bolt, but that's only when overhaul is involved.
