What's the function of this light button?

EU regulations make it compulsory to have rear fog light since the 90's. The side of the rear fog light determines the driving side (UK called it off side - off the kerb side). Notice some euro cars does have both side, Peugeot have it on the centre i.e 206.

The light intensity is brighter due to the smaller space to reflect and positioned at driver's eye level. The bulb wattage is the same for brake light and rear fog light.

In 2011, all new cars to be used in EU must be installed with DRL. All for the name of safety.

Its also for reversing purpose in those too darn dark places or low visibility area (except those which need no light for guide :p)... And of course when people tailgate me i just press this button and drop to M-3 and zoom away :p

Errr... just to add to those already given purpose... meant to be a joke (later part)

But yeah its already answered (ive read from start) but i do use it to add reverse lighting brighter at night and especially to the dimly lighted carparks when i dont see oncoming cars... the reverse light i found are too dim (maybe of my smoked tail light)

But like it was already said its for heavy rain and fog use and low visibility area ... (in my case i use it more on reversing at dim lighted street) sometimes the reverse light are not enough to light or warn others ur reversing...

sorry ment no confusion :)

For reverse, what you need is a camera. racunn... :burnout:

This is by far ... more misleading :p

I think im used to silent reverse (no reverse sensor) it makes me a better driver LOL... But like u said reverse camera coming up on next project i guess...

*Advice* Do not tint your car too dar you end up getting wrong use for a switch which should be used in poor visibility condition (not due to ur tint color) :p

me also in the driver side... i already explore the rear e46 fog lamp and i found that the left side have no socket for fog lamp...

that anyone else same ???

Mine is also on the right side only. Meant to be used during heavy rain with limited visibility for cars behind to notice better. So, use this and not the emergeny "double signal lights" during bad weather........

yeap...its used for low visibility to let drivers from behind be more aware. if both lights are turned on, it might confuse plp from behind as they will think its brake light or just bright lights...having one side will physiological make drivers aware.
on the down side, many plp will think that there's a faulty bulb on another side (they might say:kononnya bmw..) :hahaha:

Yeah can somebody confirm its only on the driver side.. ?

IMG_0880_G.jpg

depends on what year the LCM is in ur car. Mine is same like urs but a newer E46 have both sides...

confirmed my E46 99' only have right side *driver side)... it wont give me left side if i want it also... after i open both side of the light bulb compartment (you can open the plastic pin for the rear trunk to acces the compartment), i found that the left side are sealed and no bulb can be inserted (reallyy... if you want to mod also kenot)

Did you try this for the left side - http://www.e46fanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=712102

My left side had the whole complete socket and bulb but no power supply. So my Dad and I just connected power from the Right Fog light. Now both sides light up.

Salut

Just a thought bro solo, modding the rear fog light might cause people to think you are braking in bad visibility... i guess like some of the comment... but nice guide... thx for the link :)

Yes I know. I only run it in really bad weather and when I am rempiting at night because I want to increase my visibility to other drivers.

My personal thinking is - Yes it will or may confuse other drivers. But whatever makes other drivers stay a distance from my backside is good because then the probability of getting hit in the back is lower. As long as the driver see the fog lights, think its the brakes and says to himself "Eh...why is this guy braking? I should slow down and stay further from him", I'm fine with that.
