143hp vs 150hp

Same N42B20 engine but the 118i is the detuned version, which was originally available in the 2004 E46 318i.

That's what I heard and read also, "detuned", but certainly there're other stuffs that would differ 118i from 120i, otherwise everyone just get his/her favourite tuner to un-detune his/her 118i to get 120i performance.

My mfc 2008 118i has N46NB20.

Eerrr.... Thts what i thought.. but in manny weebsite, thy say the 2007 and after 118i is using the n43 engine...

And if it cost a few k to tune up 7hp, no thx... Haha

Sorry, I made a typo. I meant to say N46B20.. not N42.. that's 2001-2003 on the facelifted E46, 2004 onwards, its N46.

Refer to wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_1_Series_(E81)#Engines

The E81 is 2 doors, the E87 is 4 doors.

Both the 118i and 120i models only comes with 2 engine variants, the N43 and the N46. The N43 output can go up to 170PS because on high pressure injector, not suitable for our petrol grade. So the authorised dealer only brought in the N46 model, all 1-series here is CBU.

Of course the other differences are the trim. 120i is higher spec'ed, hence comes with leather seat, Bi-Xenons, M-Sport and 2 doors, the earlier 120i the dealer brought in non-MSport, non-Xenon 4 doors but now no more.

ok...
thx to both of u!
i dont wanna be a smart allec, i own a 118i and i just wanna clear things up in my head.. cuz, i am not convinced its performing at what they advertised... hahaha...

so, on bmw malaysia,
Engine

Cylinders/valves 4/4

Capacity in ccm 1,995

Stroke/bore in mm 90.0/84.0

Max. output in kW (PS) at 1/min 136/5,750

Max. torque in Nm at 1/min 180/3,250

136kw translates to 180hp?????? wow..... doubts...

http://www.bmw.com.my/com/en/newvehicles/1series/5door/2007/allfacts/engine/engine_data.html

320i Max. output (kW/hp/rpm) 115/156/6,400 --> this is N42, N43 or N46?

yes i think the number on the website is correct...

if i am not mistaken, on my 118i broschure last time, the 118i is rated @ 136hp...maybe they did a typo on the website... (kw and hp)

omgggggg 118i is only 50kg lighter than a 3 series???!?!?!??!?!?!?!

The E90 320i confirm is N46B20. Mine is 150PS, 2008 onward is 156PS. 50kg lighter is a lot, that's weight of an above average size girl permanent sitting inside my E90 .. :4:

looks like the 118i is the detuned n46b20...

weeeeee... that means 20hp to go!!!!

anyway, is the n46 a good base to play with?

It's aluminum block, just like the old trusty bullet proved M52 and M54. A bolt on charger kit is highly possible and it's available in the aftermarket. The valvetronic mechanism is something new compare to the old engines and the valvetronic motor is an additional maintenance burden for us.

The M42B19 1.9L 118PS engine in the prior 2002 pre-facelift E46 318i is a much hardier and low maintenance engine.

So after all these replies, bro tehyw, supercharger kit bolting-on soon? hehe.

one fine day... when the sun is bright and the wind is right..... haha....
i wonder if the f30 will use n46 engine...

anyone done a tune up for 118i?
what is the name for the n46 manual gearbox?

Same N42B20 powerplant but the 118i is the detuned edition, which was actually available in the 2004 E46 318i.
