hi bros,I need help and advise. I changed my E39 battery back in 14/12/2007, battery is original BMW battery. Today, the battery just died. When I used a volt meter to measure, it was only 10.8V. Couldn't start the car at all. Battery is less than 2 years old when it should at least last for 4years. I suspect over charging though I haven't tested it before, just a guess. Mileage of car is 199989km, M54B22, 2003 model.Question here is1) What is the voltage supply when car is running? Will it be more than 14.5V and more?2) Can I add a voltage stabilizer at the battery to stabilize the voltage?3) Anyone added voltage stabilizer to your E39 before?4) What's current cost of battery?Thank you bros.

Question here is
1) What is the voltage supply when car is running? Will it be more than 14.5V and more?
Bro, should be 14.5V. The regulator in the alternator will limit the voltage output.

2) Can I add a voltage stabilizer at the battery to stabilize the voltage?
It might help but I doubt it.

3) Anyone added voltage stabilizer to your E39 before?
I have never add any VS in my car. Usually I clean the earth/ground contact.

4) What's current cost of battery?
Search for delco. I think it depend on the AH and DIN size.
before you change the battery, the battery shop should have a device to check the condition of the battery. Sometime the battery cannot charge if the electrolyte level is low.

I thought lifespan for a car battery, in average is about 1.5 year. Maybe it will last longer if placed it in under rear seat, but will it last up to 4 years? :106:

Depending on driving condition (always undercharge if less than 10km of driving particularly town) & location of battery (avoid heat), in an E39 its in the trunk and the ori BMW battery lasted 7 years.

i got one customer driving a 528 E39 built in 1999. his car battery lasted 10 years! the original BMW battery was still intact (never been replaced) when I checked his car battery condition

replaced the marginal condition battery with Varta DIN100 - RM550/pc compare to much expensive original BMW battery that was also manufactured by Varta in Germany.

Bro, there are several reason why battery gone dead.

first is current leak. during parking, all electrical consumers must be in OFF position, meaning they are not draining any current from the battery. sometime these electronic equipments inside the car draws current even your car is locked, making the battery in discharge condition. most of the current leak culprits is after market alarm and immobilisers.

you may Google it to find out facts about automotive batteries

Update - Battery truly koyak, tested with battery tester, battery drains to 10V and can't hold charge....Charging voltage is 15V when engine is running - using sunwa analogue meter, revving the car upto about 4000rpm also showed stable and consistent voltage supply. I have not yet tried using the Sanwa digital meter yet.
There was no leakage in my car, everything is fine, everything is always OFF when I switch off my engine. I even ensure my aircon is off before starting my car as the E39 aircon sometimes will switch ON automatically before cranking the engine.

Bro Jarance,
Original BMW battery can add electrolyte? The battery could be charged but couldn't hold the charge.

Thank you

Depend on the type of battery installed. MF or maintenance free cannot refill electrolyte.

I believe some MF batteries can be refilled. It is normally just a sticker covering the filling holes.
