I bought my tyres in 2003 and was given a set of 2001 tyres. After joining this club only then I learn to know that there is a marking on the tyres for date of manufacture.I travel to my office which is only 5Km away from my home. So at times only 10Km a day. My monthly mileage does not exceed 700km.My question is that my set of tyres is already 5 years old and is it a danger to continue to use it? Thread pattern is about 50% left.

Depends on your driving style. If you like to take corners fast, as in corner "baring", then you should probably change the tyres. You will lose traction as the tyre ages - hardening of the compound.

If you are a gentle driver and drive mostly in town at speeds below 90km/h or thereabouts - should still be ok.

Check for cracks around the sidewalls (inside and outside).

If still in doubt, change the tyres. Otherwise, you won't be able to enjoy your ride. Make sure that you get as new tyres as possible when you get the new set. I got mine about six months after manufacturing date.

Read in the owners's manual the recommended life span of a tire is about 6 years

Change the tyres. After all you're driving +-700km/mth. Those 4 tyres are the only contact between you and ground. Accident can happened even less than 100m travel distance.

It all depends on how the storage have been from 2001-2003... Although we give a tyre life of 6 years. Most important, check for cracks.. Else to be on the safe side, change them..
