When I was shopping around for a UDM last week... one of the used car salesman told me that a bmw's trip meter can be 'manipulated' so don't always believe what you see!I said, the mechanical trip meter can be adjusted by just attaching it to a screw and run it backwards... but for computers, how to adjust??and he said, "with the appropriate computers".so, I want to know, how true is this? and how widespread is it? if true, can AB spot that the trip meter has been tempered with? what about the other specialists? can they spot a tempered meter? Thanks a lot guys.

Got money? Then bring here and I show you how. Keke Anyway, tempering with da meters is a low blow lar. No need to resort to this kinda "tactic". Confirm can be manipulated for both analog and digital meters.

Actually there is two counters for the mileage clocked.

One is stored in the instrument cluster and the other is ... (cannot say due to security reason).

That is why you sometime see car from Japan have very low mileage even though the car is 3 years old.

so, the answer is 'yes, it can be manipulated'.

my next question is, if I take the car to specialist/AB prior to purchasing, would I be able to get the 'true' reading?

there is a chip inside the key that records the exact mileage..that cant be tampered with.

plz correct me if i m wrong...
