To de-cat or not to de-cat?

Yeah, you're right. It's not there all the time. That's what making it so difficult to figure out. I've examined all kinds of situations and and there doesn't seem to be a common denominator which I could put my finger on. But however, lately I haven't smelled it at all. Hmmm.....:confused:

Has any E46 325 owners de-cat their exhaust? Any significant improvement (in terms of sound/grunt of the engine) or complications?
