Dear kind forumers,I desperately need your advise or recommendation. Just got out from a reputable workshop. Did my engine leaks close to RM4K now. Soon after, this happen. . .View attachment 26093Why is this happening? Care to share your experience? Lost power, consumed petrol really fast

Is your ride equipped with DSC?

Not sure what may be the reason behind the EML light but the DSC and the handbrake indicator in yellow looks like a DSC fault/failure which may be caused by either one of the following:

Faulty:
- Wheel speed sensors (about RM200-250 each)
- Steering angle sensor (about RM900)
- Brake pressure sensors (2 units in the master pump cylinder, each about RM450-RM500)
- DSC control unit (about RM2-3k used, not sure)

Best is to plug in for diagnosis to determine which fails. Mine had the same error indicators (without the EML) was due to steering angle sensor which costs about RM900 for the part alone.

You may try to clean the wheel speed sensors first before replacing (if they are the culprit) as at certain occasions the fault may be only due to dirty sensors. :)

I had the issue few years back n it was my wheel speed sensor...however..u need to diagnose to know the culprit..

Thanks for the inputs bros, Just got back from my friend's workshop. Diagnosed, Air Mass sensor faulty. Can this really happen? or should i be paying more attention on the wheel speed sensor?

wingzee, yes, my car is equipped with dsc.

Im sorry, i might be a lil bit silly asking this question, is the scanner diagnose really that accurate? what if it is the wheel speed sensor faulty instead of the air mass sensor? however, i am experiencing a bit of e rough idling at times. .

It could be true that your air mass sensor cos u experience bad consumption and rough idle...speed sensor wont cause rough idling...

What are the error messages that were shown during the diagnose?

I don't think faulty air mass sensor is the only error as that should not contribute the DSC error light, may have just be happened to be faulty as well.

The cost of used DSC is believe to be around RM2K-3K. THAT expensive? Hadui

Cant remember what are the error messages, however, they were to busy paying attention to that stupid air mass sensor. Quoted me RM 500 used unit. Fair price?

I am just being skeptical over this errors, could the mechanic somehow purposely put a fault on that sensor unit? It is getting on my nerves now, RM4K in a month, it is just tooo material for me. Sigh.

But then again, life must go on. . . .

Got almost identical problem months ago, but mine was speed sensor. The mechanic showed me that the speed reading of one of the four wheels wasnt consistent with the rest (shown using OBD scanner while driving). I dont think that a faulty speed sensor will cause you high fuel consumption, but a faulty air mass sensor do.

But then again I'm a newbie in this BMW thingy and I could be wrong..just my RM0.02. Good luck!

Then, it must be the air mass sensor. Any idea what is the fair price for an used unit?

No idea on the price of the MAF sensor. maybe give half cut shops or BA/Bomin a call?

I don't think errors can be "created" during diagnose though.

In my case, I have spent about close to RM15k (mostly maintenance and replacement of faulty parts, inclusive of some mods) in my first 4 months of ownership, if that makes you feel better. Just amortize these maintenance costs throughout the ownership period, the feel of driving your UDM in tip-top condition and you may feel abit better. :)

The diagnostic is as accurate as the type of tool that is used. Pls advise what type of scanner did your mechanic used?

Normally, if you are not sure of the error, you clear all the error!!!! if there are faulty sensors, the diagnostic tool will capture this.

If there are no error, then it is good. You just drive around and wait for the next light come ON. When it does, plug in the diagnostic tool and scan.

I use INPA coz it will tell you exactly at what mileage, speed and rpm when it happen.

The 3 little lights came on in my car and it took me about 2 months before I nailed it.
changed 2 air hoses, DISA and finally the ICV to resolve the problem. When change ICV and DISA, you need
to perform the adaptation or else the alarm will come back. Another way to adapt is to go for hard drive.

Note:
If the EML, DSC and Brake light all come on, concentrate on the DME/ECU module
If DSC and Brake Light comes on, concentrate on the ABS and DSC module.

If you have already spend 4K for the workshop repair, might as well spend RM180 to buy your own diagnostic tool.
You will be surprise that you can save a lot of money DIY when you know what wrong with your ride.

I am looking at the positive side once its fixed, I know its working right for me. Its a small price to pay for an ultimate driving machine.

No worse than any Audi or Merc of the same vintage - You may be putting right the maintenance neglect of previous owners - but anything you do will be a job less for the future rite? he he

Here are the cost breakdown:

1st Visit = RM1900
2nd Visit=
-Jantung RM250 (Thou i do not know what is the english term for this engine part)
-Hose to deepstick RM85
-Hose to Valve cover RM143
-Valve cover gasket RM105
-Rubber Screw Seal RM75
-Rubber Intake RM100
-Steering rack rack boot RM60 each
Labour RM 468

3rd Visit:-
Oil Sum gasket RM108
Flywheel Oil Seal RM108
Flywheel Housing Gasket RM35
Steering Cover RM68
Labour RM480
Engine Mounting RM 145 each
Gearbox Mounting RM45 each

Right after i got out from the 3rd visit. That stupid 3 yellow death lights popped out on the speedometer :(

Jarance, Where can i get the Diagnostic tool? A good reliable one perhaps? Yes, planning to start to DIY, hoping to learn the hard way of understanding my car. he he

For a start, i'll do some cleaning for that MAP sensor /Air Mass sensor with CRC. Will update the outcome, fingers crossed.

Go for the K + DCan USB Diagnostic tools. Check out my previous GB. There is a link at the last page.

beside cleaning the MAF, clean also the DISA and ICV as well. It took me about 3 hours the first time but now I can do it in under 1 hour..

However, the job is a bit more complicate. google for online at youtube..

Tip: Remove the side cover at the ECU location and the filter housing for easy access to the ICV.
You may spend 20 minutes removing this but it will make the removing of the ICV very easy cos one of
the retaining bolt is very difficult to remove because it was block by the cover.
