Dear all, My e39 seems to have pretty high reading of temperature, usually about 39c to 41c in day time, is it normal? And night time would be around 28c to 29c even in basement. My dad's e46 those days have much lower reading...just wondering if other e39 owner here face the same? Regards

is the temp sensor in the right place?

the temp sensor should be on the right hand side bottom engine cover in front of the right front wheels, jutting out.... if it is not there, it might be getting reading the wrong temp (eg it's in the engine bay).

Seems to normal to me too. The highest i noticed mine ever went was 44 C. Must be frying hot on the tarmac!

these days with the scorching heat it should be quite normal, mine went up to 41c. and the other day was at 38c even at 110kph on the highway!!

Thanks all for your info, it sounds normal for an e39 then...however i was too impatience and had the sensor changed earlier...burnt RM 185 for nothing...sigh...patience patience...

Just to share, my dad's e46 have much lower readings though...one day must get a termo and check which is the correct one.

I had the same reading too and thought my temp sensor is bad. So after you changed to a new sensor, what is the temp reading?? Still the same or what??

Hi Herbert, it doesnt make any difference thus i said burnt my RM 185 for nothing...maybe i'll go back and have it checked again. Just doesnt make sense to have temperature up to 41c or more...usually our weather is 38c and below.

Regards

I thought 44 C is the highest it ever registered on my car...only to realize today as i was driving back at around 7 ish pm it showed 46 C!

I was chatting with Naidu (our BMW air-cond specialist) last night and he mentioned that kaput outside temp sensor will affect coldness of our air-cond. Does it sounds logical??

Paging JohnJ,

In one of your post, i rememeber you saying if outside temp sensor kaput, we'll have a hard time driving during raining day or something along that line...

In other words, if the outside temp sensor kaput, it'll affect the cooling thus on a rainy day, if your a/c blows warm air, all your windscreen will be fogged up on the inside.

Can confirm if this is what you meant?

the reading doesn't sound right. The E39 comes with climate control. The outside temp reading is needed to ensure the cabin is not too cold or too hot based on what we had already set on the climate control

bro,
It's too high. It should reading should be around 30 - 38 C.

Herbert,
Yes, it will affect the internal air-cond operations too!

I think it's normal. Mine capture 41 degree highest. Best is make sure it's at the right location as Affan mentioned. These days if you notice, even with tinting, your car interior is still hot! global warming....

This weekend i'll go down under and clean my temp sensor. Could be measuring wrong temp reading prolly due mud/dirt/grimp/grease/oil/ and all the yucky eeeky stuff stucked over the sensor...therefore registering a much higher reading than actual.

i also think it's normal now a day ...last friday mine capture 46 C around 2:30pm and 4:30-5:30 around 36-38 C. tak boleh tahan oooo rentong rasanya....

Hi sifu,
mine always below 41C after changing to XADO engine oil.
dont know why as compare last time using mobil one.
no harm to try.

Hi all, after a week of driving with new sensor replace, it still shows 35c at night....damn sad...gonna go back and try to sort out....sounds like electrical fault to me....

Could it be its sensing engine heat?

how about in the morning before you first start the car? it should read in the low 20s C.
