I have a 1999 523i UK Spec with the previous Steptronic where to change up one had to push the gear knob forward. From 2002 onwards (facelifted E46 onwards I think), BMW reversed it where one pulled to change up. For those who want to convert their old Steptronic to this new set up, it's just a 5 min rewiring job. Got it done at M Power Taman Mayang. Much better now that gear changes feel more natural! Hope this helps anyone who ever wondered about this and never got an answer. For the others, sorry I blew your last 2 mins spent on reading this.

He packaged it with a whole bunch of other upgrades I did at his shop. My guess is no more than a couple of hundred bucks. No parts, no modic required. Just his know how and a few mins.

hi tc@torpedo,

great news. been wondering for a while if any local shop can do it.

what about the indicator (+/-) next to the shifter? how do i replace it as the signage is now should be the opposite i.e minus at the top, plus at the bottom.

For the signage, that's a little tricky. For E39s with this new gearshift arrangement, only the final year models comes with it - 2002 to early 2003. The E60 was from 2003 onwards. So you gonna need to luck to find one of this type at the chop shop. Unless u r really picky or lots of people drive your car in manual mode, gotta live with it la until you find one.
