BMWs are truly one of the best balanced car in the market. However mass production to keep cost down (and max shareholder returns) means they share chassis and platforms with a few models. That's why cars like Z4 does not drive as well as say.. 'customized' cars like Porsche Boxster. But they are not as expensive....

To have minor (or major) problems like premature ignition coil failures for a 'premium' car such as BMW is some what disappoinment.

Prestige, performance, handling.... awards go to BMW (European Marque) but reliability....??? Japanese is king of the hill... as shown soon by Toyota when they become the biggest car manufacturer in the world if they hit their target of selling 9.6million cars this year....

people in general just want a relaible car that can move them around... :D

You're right again...Reliability...Japanese is the king of Hill...after 7 years driving my Honda Civic...the engine still smooth like brand new...never had any engine problem at all...

hi,

I posted the same problem in this forum too, but mine is pre-face lift, so mechanic said this is not due to the coil, but more to air valve leakage... since my is non- valvetronic..

So need advice on:
Where's the best to get repaired?
how much will this repair be? just try not to get slaughtered.. :)

hallo ppl..

I'm sent my 318ci to Ah Meng (M-speed) USJ.
The condition of my car is getting much more better.

I changed the fuel pump and clean up some of the parts.
Smartcorp,
how much all together? just to make sure...

Hi all,

the dreaded Ignition Coil problem has struck again. Started the car yesterday for the first time and it started to "Vibrate" more than usual and immediately suspected coil problem. Called AutoBav toll free number for help and they said should be ok to drive to Sg. Besi centre.

The drive to the centre was fine but everytime I stopped at a traffic lights, the car would vibrate and it would be very obvious to other cars on the road, it's like "Hey, why is this Beemer shaking like that reaction....".

Anyways, Hairul from Sg. Besi did a diagnostic and confirmed coil in Cylinder 2 not working and since the car was only "out" of warrant 4/5 months ago, he agreed to apply for "good will" which was really good of him.

Did not check whether they replaced with the Bosch coil but Hairul did say that it's about RM150 per coil, before labour I believe. Car is 325i E46, I believe production date 7/2003. So I believe the problem still affects car that were produced pre-2004.

Gents, just wanted to do a quick update. For anyone who still has not replaced their Ignition coils from Bremi to the BMW recommended Bosch, but would like to do it cost effectively. Just converted all remaining 5 of my Bremi coils at only RM100 per piece. Have checked around town and found the best price at a parts supplier located in Kepong.

The part # Bosch 12131712219
for the E46 325i ('03)

But I presume this applies to all E46 models post 2003. Total costs RM500/- and 30mins spent installing it. This represented a near 48% savings if done at AB. I even had the cheek to call AB's emergency service line to get some instructions on how to do it.

Procedure wise, it was as straight forward as replacing an air filter. Just lift off the cover over where the coils were located, unplug the power supply, pull out the old coils and stick the new coils in.

Am completely satisfied with the result and the car seems to idle a "little" more smoother. PM me if anyone needs more details on where to get parts and installation instructions.

tank- wher you get ignition coils that price? pls pm me for details thanks!

btw- another common reason for the shaking comes from the vacum tube that runs ontop the engine(valvetronic).. if its leaking(happens due to the heat from engine) then the car vibrate oso.. cheap to replace

Strange - my 2001 E46 325i's coils have never been changed since new.

You must be extremely lucky. My Bremi coils have busted on 3 separate occassion. I hate to imagine having that happen to me when I'm on one of my trips out to Penang, or Terengganu. Even within the city, it's quite nerve wrecking when one of it goes. I had to drive real slowly to AB to get it fixed. The 2nd time it happened, I just got AB AutoResponse to come my rescue.

Do check if you're still on Bremi. If you are, definitely change to the Bosch. Otherwise, the bare minimum you should do is buy one Bosch coil and keep as spare in your care. Make sure you also have a size 10 adjustable wrench in your car to pry open the cover on top of the coils. That's all you need, and if it does "go", call AB for instruction on what to do.
