Some salient points extracted from the Star article and attached pic of the 'enemy' :

http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2012/7/19/nation/11686482&sec=nation

"The AES will use about 800 fixed and 500 portable cameras to monitor traffic in 831 “black spots” located along highways as well as state and federal roads.
The black spots have been identified by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) as having the highest number of fatal accidents
About 200 of the fixed cameras will be installed at traffic light junctions, including those in housing areas.
The two portable speed trap cameras demonstrated yesterday were radar based and can detect cars anywhere across a four-lane carriageway.
Jenoptik Robot Malaysia managing director Marc Lamy said the images captured will be verified by JPJ officers while Redflex Traffic Systems Asia manager David Handley said all cameras will record both still images as well as video footage."

Looks like balik kampung is gonna be one loooooooooong mundane drive..

anybody taking bets on how long before this initiative is scrapped due to technical/practical/financial reasons?

looks like we have got to keep reminding ourselves to drive within the speed limit....aiyoh, takes the fun factor out of driving a bimmer. Probably it makes sense now to go cancel my order and buy a MyVee instead

yeah man. a major buzz kill.

The Edge reported on Saturday that two firms have been awarded the contract to implement the enforcement system. ATES Sdn Bhd and Beta Tegap will spend between RM300 million and RM400 million each to set up traffic cameras at 831 “black spots” nationwide.

Both ATES and Beta Tegap are entitled to RM16 per valid summons for the first five million issued. They will then split the remaining revenue evenly with the government up to a cap of RM270 million each, The Edge reported.

The firms will each receive 7.5 per cent from the remaining revenue and the government will keep the rest.

According to the business daily, each company will likely issue 10 million valid summonses over a five-year period from which all paid summonses will be deposited into a fund from which the firms will recoup their investment.

The Edge estimated that half the summonses, each carrying a penalty of RM300, will be paid, resulting in a fund size of RM1.5 billion per company. This would amount to RM416 million paid to each contractor.

This would be a handsome return if the companies manage to keep costs closer to RM300 million, even if the entire investment is written down after the five-year concession.

In oversea, this kind of system objective are to educate drivers, but here its to make profit. Only rainy days, I see a lot of drivers still following the car in front as if the roads are dry.

This is bad news :(
No more KL - SG in 2 hours :(

Not true. In Australia, it is widely known to be used as a revenue generator.

Looks like another "blunder after another" ... One wonders when will they realized that installing all those expensive gadgets will not reduced road fatalities. What it will do is only waste the public funds and make rich the few. Physical presence will be more than effective than any camera anytime of the day.

Like wht bro mizan mention, in no time those things will encounter problems after problems and at the end of the day, more funds are wasted but yet the main objective of reducing fatalities, fail big time.
Creating awareness that "speeds kills" is not by installing camera's at "discreet" and "strategic" location. That is the same as one traffic cop hiding in some bushes waiting to "shoot" you down ... :frown: ....

Just my 2sens worth of concern :frown:
