Hey Guyz, Am getting a midly audible "ringing" sound from one of my wheels only when the car is crusing at the 90 - 100km/h range. The "sound" is not there otherwise, only when at that crusing speed. Sent it AB Sg. Besi and they did not seem concerned about it. Have been reading some of members post on topics that could be similar and some people have suggested Ball Bearings? Should I suspect the same in this situation?

Sounds like it is the wheel bearings to me.....

but check your tires as well.... just in case!
Worst case scenario, final drive.

Two comments.

1. wheel bearing, since it is coming from only one of your wheels, and you say ringing, which would suggest metallic sound, instead of humming, which would suggest tires.

2. take your car to another workshop. wheel bearing is unbelievably easy to diagnose. you just need to jack up the wheel, spin it, and feel the shock absorber for vibration. if ur workshop did not even do that to ascertain/rule out wheel bearing, i would simply go somewhere else, unless you got too much money and not enough time/interest; no offence, my two-cents.

Thanks for the advice guyz,

Lee, can you reccomend a good workshop. Have been to AB Sg. Besi previously and I think they are sometimes a bunch of lazy sods. They are either too busy or worst case, don't know what to do.

A friend has referred me to Bavarian Motor Works in Sg. Ara (I think) along the Tropicana highway, any experience with them??

I have no experience w the workshop you mentioned.

Coincidentally, I also go to the Sg Ara area, but to another workshop, M1, a Beemer specialist.

I have been going there ever since getting my car a few years ago; I suppose you can count me as a loyal and regular customer there. The three owners, Jeffrey, KC, and Raymond are all very helpful and passionate about beemers.

If you go there, tell them Lee, blue e36, sent you. They know I'm VERY particular, and if my friends are not satisfied w anything, I'll complain to them.

M1 is definitely not the cheapest place in town. But they suit me fine. I've also tried other workshops to save money, but ended up sending it back to M1 to get the job properly done, always a case of penny wise pound foolish.

I find the trick is to locate a workshop w good credentials, and build a rapport w the sifus there. As they understand your needs and style of car maintenance, they can serve you better and more cost-effectively. If they continue to overcharge and underserve you, best find another workshop.

Had the same problem coming from my left rear but when I go above 140 km/h, turn out to be wheel bearing

bro.....either u hav a telephone in the tyres :D or u need to change ur wheel bearings..... ;)

get ur regular mech to check it out....

Hey Guyz,

poped by "Bavarian Auto Works" in Kg. Kayu Ara. Spoke to Mr. Loke (I recommend this guy to all forummers, a really straight forward and "clean" guy, no fuss and if it requires no changing he will tell you. He's probably best to speak to when problem is hardware related, bushings couplings...etc.).

His diagnosis is that the problem is related to the rear axle and not a wheel bearing issue since the noise does not increase in intensity as you pick up speed. The noice is similar to a "mosquito" buzzing noise and it is only restricted (in my car) to between 90km/h to 100km/h only.

Ken.

Hi Lee,

am planning to go to AB Glenmarie to get a final opinion on it. Loke from "Bavarian Auto Works" did say that it was not a problem and since the car is slight out of the 2 year warranty Oct'05 expired I will see if I can claim good will.

Hi tank34,

Your friend must have kill the rear axle as he accelerated out of that ramp towards bangsar :D

What's the damage to fix the rear axle?

Make sure you complain a lot to AB and they should at least give you the parts for free but may have to pay for labour.
