Guys my e21 320/6 currently undergoing restoration. Costs incurred so far are as follows:-
1. Rims Restoration RM400.00 BBS 13" rims
Try and get 15x7 inch, if you are concerned about authenticity, Alpina do 15x7 and 15x6.5 but cost about Euro380 each, not including shipping.
What you need to look for - 15x7 with offset 12mm and PCD100.
2. Tyres
Getting the above rims fitted with 186/60/13 (ori size) quite difficult, what would be an alternative size?
Correct original size is 185/70 x 13 - Other sizes that can match diameter for the same rim size would be 195/65 or 205/60 - Sumitomo makes them, for US market I believe - doubt if you can find at that size.
Not easy to find as you said, hence, my comment in item 1.
3. Chrome Bumpers RM240 front and rear
Very cheap - where did you do it? PM me the address please
4, Welding RM650.00
Wow!! Must been a fair bit. No?
5. Termostat, spark plugs BOSCH RM104
Might want to get the Iridium Power spark plugs in the next round - RM50 each. Much better -engine smoother, more torque/power
6. Brakes repairs RM392
Seems pricey, what work done? Caliper repair kit is abotu RM100-120, vented discs, RM110-120 each) Check the caliper pistons for corrosion - mine are and the pads "makan senget". Changing to NOS Volvo 240 four pot calipers soon. Got them for RM500 each. Currently in process of painting.
7. Air cond RM360.00

Check out Ebay. I think I saw some - worldwide search under Ebay.co.uk , opens up the European auctioneers. Doubt our local suppliers will have any left. Best bet would be Bomin.

Cool!! Like the Alpine White. Cost depends on where you go. My total package cost RM4K +, and the car started rusting about three-four months from getting car back from paint shop. Seems to be common problem up to 1988 3 series.

Last time I checked - rears cost about RM195 each. I think fronts are RM295 each. I am told First Division still stocks Bilsteins - might want to consider. Bilstein sports have a very big bore absorber shaft (ie the stainless steel rod)

There is some danger of making the rust problem worse by going to bare metal, particularly if the weather is humid. The longer it is left exposed, the greater the chances of the metal becoming oxidised. And rust is Fe2O3, if i remember my chemistry correctly. I think there is another chemical formula for iron oxide, can't remember what it is.
There is a zinc based primer that should help reduce the rust problem. Got this from another bimmer forum.

Sideways, I was offered an E21 323i two weeks. Bounced the purchase off a forumer. Still thinking about it. It's going for less than 8k. Fair condition with some rust at the rear end otherwise the car is great. Buzz me.

Fuhrer is right. True resto work is when you strip it to bare metal, rework the metal, zinc primer it, complete sanding, then painting followed by re-trimming work to perhaps leather or even high quality PU, set of wheels, suspension ... you name it.
This is the process I get involved in when restoration work is done. there is no other way out for older classic bodies. Costs can be high but every dime well worth spent.
Yesterday, went to a Classic/Vintage car Show at dataran, KL and wow! True classic beauties about 150 of them showing off their perfectionist qualities. There were Merc all around, but where were the BMWs, the 3.0CSi's, the 635CSi's, the E12's and what have you. Only saw a E21 restored as well, bright red, with black leather interior, truely original. I will post the pics for all to see soon.

Was the e21 the one with bottlecap rims. If it was, it was also there last year. The bottle cap rims don't really suit the e21 IMO. I think the owner is a mat salleh.
I went but was a little late. The event finished early. It was supposed to be on from 930 am to 3pm.
By the time I got there, very few cars were still parked. Only one I liked was the Aston Martin DB6. Was told it had a cracked cylinder head.
BTW, how much does it cost to do the full stripdown, bare-metal work, right up to painting?

I have been trying to get shocks for my rear but to no avail (BOGE), 3 shops that I have inquired are Bomin (Sachs RM160 each), Munich auto (Gabriel RM180 each) and Bavarian auto (none avail)
I am looking for the oil base BOGE rear shocks, where could I get them and how much?
As for the front and rear emblem, only the latter shops carries the original about RM40++ for front and RM75++ rear, the rest of the shops only have the non genuine parts selling for RM40++ each.
As for the paint where could I send? So far a Segambut shop offered 1.6k in and out to respray, maintaining the same color Alpine Weiss using Dupont, anywhere I could get cheaper with good wmanship? Rust and dents treated!
So far the following were spent
1. Chrome front and rear bumpers RM240

3. Ducaro GA 185/70/13 4 pcs RM450
4. Rust and dents treatment RM650
5. Air Cond Renewed RM350

Outstanding Work that needs to be done
1. Paint Job RM?????
2. Rear Shocks (Do I need to replace the springs when replacing the shocks?)
3. Alignment and balancing
4. Interior Cleaning
5. Engine Tuning (Seems to be inconsistent idling prob prior repacing the centre exhaust box, upon replace the idling prob resolved however at times it seems to idle at a higher RPM slightly above 1000RPM)
Managed to save cost by canibalizing parts from another e21!
The car is a stock standard e21 320/6!

Forget trying at Bavarian Auto. Last time I went there, they told me that they scrapped all their stock of e21 parts (not sure about e30 parts). They simply threw the parts away. Their focus is on the newer models only. Basically, they are saying F-off to all owners of older bimmers.
Best source for me thus far has been CSS Autoparts, fka Stuttgart Auto, Jalan Ipoh.
If you are interested in the Motorsport original bumper + spoiler made of ABS, you can get it from CSS.
Also got my NOS Volvo calipers (four pot) to upgrade my brakes through CSS. They cost me RM500 each.
I also heard that First Division stock Bilstein shocks.
Bomin has lots of old stocks. Some of the chrome bits, door handles in various colours, etc. Be friendly and you get to go up their storage area to see for yourself. I think I saw quite a few e30 rear discs there too.

Just completed my e21 restoration project except for the following prob.
Bought some parts from there, quite surprise they do stock parts for an e21, got everything except for the mud flaps for the e21 as they only have the rear and it is selling for SGD78 for a pair.
Parts that was acquired are rear shocks SGD68 each, expansion tank SGD68 and oil filters and a few others.
The car is fully restored except for the following
1. Hub caps - Original BMW caps to loose to fit on my BBS 13" rims (original e21 rims)
2. First 3 plugs shows high carbon deposits?
3. My driver side front bush connecting to the ball joints damaged thus alignment not possible? How much would it be to get it replaced?

Where could I do a compression check as I am suspecting it was adjusted too rich due to high deposit build up on the 1st 3 plugs. Top overhaul would be my last resort
