guys, was wondering what kind of engine oil are u guys using, is it compulsory to use fully syn on a E30 engine..(1985 323i). As i notice from this forum, the price for the engine oil that you guys purchase ranges from RM45 - 102 (4 L). I've surveyed the price for fully syn engine oils, the cheap ones is RM145 (elf) and the best (recommended by the spare part shop) is RM180 (mobil)..As for the car i mention, it requires 2 bottles of 4L oil..Can you guys suggest what is best for the car. Would appreciate that.TQcheers

Hi..

I am using Bardahl 5-40 Fully Syn (RM90 only) Original from Cycle and Carriage.

AUDI A4 Caltex GTX Magnatec 15-40 Semi Syn RM78

WIRA 1.6 Idemitsu 15-40 Semi Syn RM75

pussy, the engine oil u said, 20W50, is it mineral based and how much does it cost?

geoffreylee, the engine oil u said is pretty cheap, taking consideration that it's fully syn oil and ori from C&C..

I go for normal Shell oil mineral based as it burns well too! HE HE HE

seriously, mineral based are ok for normal souls like me.....only advice which ALL my mechanics tell me is change as to the factory frequency.

jules, what's the factory requirement for the engine oil for E30..Does anyone still have the service manual..how bout other oils such as transmission oils and etc..

if the car i'm getting has been serviced using fully syn oil all the while, would it be recommended to downgrade to semi syn or even mineral oils?

if it has been fully syn, then leave it alone.. let it run like it was.. dun find trouble..

let's say i would like to use mineral for the engine, what is the best rating for the oil ( is that the name for it)

5W 30
10W 40 and which brand is commonly used..need to service the car already coz the engine check light is on..

*out of topic, what does the dipped beam check light means? mine is on already..

go with any 10W40 oil and you will be fine..

if you are having vanos, dun put in 0w30 neither 5w30 oils... you will need a overhaul... oil too thin..

thx pussy and all for the advice and feedback, it's really usefull,
i think i will be using 15W40 for my engine..

tq again..

cheers

I rember reading a BMW Car Magazine guide on E30 M3 which recommened Castrol Magnatec 10w40.

I used it on my E30 for 4 yrs with oil change every 5000km or so and my engine was very smooth.

I stll use Castol Magnatec on my E36.

Pussy, pardon me for digging out an old thread but your statement there is very very worrying because SC now is giving the exact oil you discourage us to put!!!

How?

I really wonder how come Fully Synthetic oil of normally 5W-40 can come with so many different prices from below RM100 to more than RM200. A salesman from C&C is getting his oil from C&C for both Bardahl Semi and Full sync at the same price, of course he makes more margin selling the Full sync la..

There really is limited BB-LL04 rated oil around, so far I only found one and that's Torco which is retailing at above RM200 :(
