I have got advice by my mechanic that my heavy stering is due to failure of my power stering pump. buy at chop shop power stering pump for e30 ( do no wheather is for m20 or m40 - if there any difference? at that pum indicate 110 bar) after change to a new power pump, it seems that the stering is still heavy. get another pump but this time, i get from e32 model at the pump indicate it is 130 bars. it ok if i install this pump to my car, any side effect? another thing is, it i get a right advice from my mechanic ie to change power stering pump, any other posiblelity that it is not pump, it is something else that make my heavy stering. need your all advice. my car is e30m40 convert to 2.5l and power stering rack is alloy.

Power streeing pump can be repaired, but need to find a good mechanic to do it.

Me had the same problem - heavy steering. Later found out there is leakage on power steering rack.

Got it repaired for around RM300+ (can't remember exact figure), now turning left ok but turning right still heavy  . Another mechanic adviced that it could be due to a dislocated oil seal / O ring inside steering rack :( .

Hi cklim,

My car is e36 318 year 1997. The power steering pump is making noise when I fully turn the steering to the left or right. Do u mind to share with me the mechanic who can repair it without changing the whole pump?

Thanks.

For the past 1 year, since I bought my car, I have changed 2 power steering pumps. I was told by my mechanic (a BMW specialist) that the noise will eventually comes back after 1-2 years because of the bearing inside the pump will worn out. The noise from the pump was unbearable, especially when my car go slow and making turns.

Hence, he recommended me to change a pump without the bearing and did some modification. He guarantee the noise will not return..hehehe.. I took his advice and so far no noise from the replaced new pump.. :D It cost me about RM500, inclusive labour.
