Power Stering Problem-e30m40

i have a problem with my power stering, it heavy i and it took a look of effort to turn it. can somebody help me. i have top up power stering fluid, power stering hose is ok except a tiny leakage (of PS fluid) at stering rod. It is necessary to replace power stering resevoir fluid may be every 2 years or necessary at all.

There must be a pressure leak.Try getting your power steering fluid flush and get the leaking hose fix.

What you need to to suck all the fluid from the reservior and add in new fluid. Continue doing this a few days after you find the ATF fluid is clean.

Maybe PS pump kaput liao!! :nyehehe:

For the PS pump kaput the symptom is that there is some moaning noise coming from the pump when you turn the steering.

if there is a screeching sound coming from your steering wheel area, it is probably your bearing and need regreasing

so far so good no screeching sound coming from my steering wheel, how about stering rack? normaly why they change stering rack, it is because this simpton (heavy) or because of it leackage(every day need to top-up fluid) other opinion said because of the stering rack leackage, the presure also leal thus it made stering feel "heavy". how through is this theory. need your all advise.

CAn be repaired with repair kit. O rings etc will be replaced. Did mine when I just got my E30.

Faulty steering racks on e36 318i M40 symptoms is that when straightening the car your steering tends to feel lock at centre.

bmmad318i - How much did it cost in total for changing the repair seal kit + labour?And where did u do it in JB?

For the kIT IF I remember correctly is RM180.....done it at M Technic. Even that they no not guarantee if it will not stop the leak but fortuantely for me it works.

I did the repair kit more than a yr ago.It reduced the leakage, now I top up every other week but it still leaks.

Since I'll be moving to a house soon and dont want to stain the tiles, I need to get a second hand steering.

How much?

What about a recon one...I read in Motor Trader that someone in Segamat/Johor recons power steering racks?

I VE CALL KEDAI KAT SEGAMAT/JOHOR TU, VERY EXPENSIVE. ADA SATU KEDAI, IF I NOT MISTAKEN BA AUTO, RECOND THEY SELLING AT RM 1000, guarantee 1 year

I called the Segambut shop, they quoted me RM1350 for a recon steering rack plus must give them our steering.

Too expensive. I might as well try my luck with a second hand steering rack for RM600-700.

if ur steering rack leaking, then send it for overhaul.

if ur steering really hard to steer or at time squeking noise occured, check ur PS fluid, PS pump, replace if neccesary..

last time my e30 with m40 engine & the steering so hard to turn, some people advise me to replace the rack, some people advise me to replace the pump.

recently i converted to m20 engine, using back the old rack, pump come together with the m20 engine, now i feel much much more easier to turn compare to last time. much more lighter..

Too dirty power steering fluid will cause your power steering rack malfunction one or both side becoz it clog up the circuit inside.
