Kudos to Petronas for sponsoring the return of the famed Silver Arrows Mercedes Works Team! The livery of the 2010 F1 car unveiled yesterday was stunning, as was the sight of Michael Schumacher with PETRONAS across his chest. It really puts Petronas in Class 1 in the world of lubricants, to be associated with Mercedes. I'm glad that they bucked the trend and backed a team for real brand image and commercial reasons, instead of the expected 'national service' and the MY Lotus team, even though heads may roll as a result. :top:It looks like Merc dealers will be filling Syntium 3000 LL too from now on. :)

Yup! certainly heading the right direction in lifting the Petronas brand.. so are there really pouring Petronas lub into the new Mercedes GP cars?!

Dunno, but that hardly matters. The association with Mercedes becomes worldwide. Do you know how famous the Silver Arrows team was in it's heyday?

I understand that a lot of people at the top are miffed that they didn't sponsor the MY team instead. For doing what's best rather than what's expected, they have my fullest support, especially Tan Sri HM. :top:

I am an ex-employee of PETRONAS.
I am very proud of them ... and their achievements.
Congratulations.

:listen: yes astroboy, they will be using syntium as it is the part n parcel of the whole sponsorship. Anyway, you orso knw what, that all synthetic has almost the same technology ... whts the most important thing is the global branding that Petronas had in its strategies ....the marketing expect of its global advertising strategy.:top:

I think BMW AG must have regretted of pulling out from F1, otherwise it would have been interesting to see these two marques slugging it out on the track! :)

Yes agree, very proud of them. :top: Actually fully-synthetic oil is a very small portion of the market. The big mass market chunk is G-III oils, and Petronas now uses our own crude (Tapis?), to refine into G-III in Melaka SP2, to sell under the FL Selenia flag in Europe and RoW. And now, one news photo of Schumey with PETRONAS across his chest is worth a thousand print ads! These are the solid moves of a global Fortune 500 company, not 'for show only' smoke and mirrors, reaching round the head to touch the nose, etc.

Petronas acquired well-known Italian blender Selenia for 1Bill Euros in 2007 and this was the news report:

Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) has completed the acquisition of the entire interest in FL Selenia, Europe's largest independent producer and marketer of branded automotive lubricants and specialist fluids, from Kohlberg Kravis Robert & Co LP.

According to Petronas, the acquisition brings another strong brand to the company's business and adds critical mass to its lubricants markets in Europe, together with strong original equipment manufacturing (OEM) relationships and world-class research and development capabilities.

Italy-based FL Selenia has operations across Europe, South America and the United States, producing high-end lubricants, transmission, anti-freeze and specialist fluids for automobiles, truck, agricultural tractors, earth-moving machinery and other industrial equipment.

But now there's talk that Tan Sri HM's contract will not be renewed. :( If it comes to pass, of course it will be 'unrelated' to which F1 team was sponsored.

Frankly, BMW is nowhere compared to Mercedes in motorsports. Mercedes has been successful in all fields of motorsports from F1 downwards. BMW can only lay claim to limited success in some segments. Mercedes' global brand image and value is also higher than BMW's.

The value of association with Mercedes is a quantum leap from association with BMW. The Silver Arrows itself is an iconic brand. Juan Manuel Fangio was a Silver Arrows driver...

That rumour has been around for quite some time.

If indeed is true, it will be another case of politics getting into the way.

Under Tan Sri HM, Petronas has done a wonderful job and provided plenty to the nation's well being. Let's hope common sense prevails!

In terms of motorsport history, there is no doubt that Mercedes has a richer and chequered tradition.

However, BMW has also build its reputation on the track since the 70s and who can forget the BMW turbocharged engines that helped Piquet to win his second world championship.

To me it is important for BMW to continue their association with the pinnacle of open wheel racing, as that is their DNA!

I can only hope BMW will be a part of F1 in the future, at least as an engine supplier!

Cheers

...looking at the words Petronas across Schumacher's chest really made me proud to be a Malaysian.

hahahahhaa.........on paper today:
mercedes offer more lower contract than other team

well, that news on Tan Sri's contract might come out today. Very sad day for Malaysia.

-another ex-employee- hahaha

Why hahaha? The joke would be on us...again. Another globally-capable person who isn't allowed to make this country as great as it can be, by people who can only think in terms of their own power and control within our borders. Small minds abound. As I said in another thread, use your vote wisely...and end the joke.

well many people left for the various policies in place back then, including me. Now, got succession problem issues even for a company like Petronas. It's tough because it has to deal with politics. This should be a straightforward appointment but you know la....it's the only piggybank left for Malaysia I suppose

Well, we now know the 'succession' plan. Replace someone who's made sound visionary decisions, held on to the piggy bank keys tightly and is respected internationally, with someone who's older, has already retired, and is relatively unknown even here. :stupid:

Thank you Tan Sri, you have my respect, and I look forward to seeing the logo fly with the Silver Arrows, at least for one season. :top:

The Petronas Silver Arrows came in 5th in the first test at Jerez. :top: Quick, in what position was the Lotus?

Actually its the BMW Sauber F1 team...essentially the Sauber team. BMW quit, but they had registered the name for the 2010 season. Peter Sauber (the old new boss) is forced to keep the "BMW" name for this year due to this.

Petronas has taken a brave step in providing a team other than it's national team. I have no hesitation is saying it was the best move, no point having one of the best companies in Malaysia letting their brand stick on a backmarker for seasons to come.

Sorry...I just feel Malaysia have done the wrong thing going into F1 as a full fledged team. I'll be happy to be proved wrong though.
