Anyone experienced or have sniffed petrol fumes in the cabin after idling for a period of time with air cond switched on?I happen to have this petrol smell like as if it's coming directly of my a/c vents when idle for a period of 20mins or so.I'm not sure if replacing my fuel tank cap will do the trick or could it be elsewhere? There is no any petrol smell from under the hood though.Any advise/feedback is well appreciated.

When not on the air cond got smell inside the cabin or not ?

When you open the front engine bay got the petrol smell or not ?

check your petrol tank cover under the rear bench. the rubber seals may be broken. or the fuel line coming out of it.

I had this before... The rubber sills for one of the six injectors had worn out and it became brittle. Thus when fuel is being injected, some of it vaporizes out of the rubber sills. So I resorted to changing the injector... Wouldn't take the risk of the car catching fire. After all, fuel in vaporized state is in its most combustible state. Couple that with the heat inside the engine bay, you know what might happen next.

Thanks for the feedback. I will have them checked ASAP. Will post update here once rectified. Cheers.

I believe that also translates to poor fuel consumption as fuel vaporizes into thin air.

Then you have check you engine bay. It may be came from your injsctor. Or may be from the host to injector got problem.

I notice the same smell in my 39..found a tiny hole under a carpet mat at the left rear passenger legroom..dont know what triggers the smell..but sure it is an oil smell..anyone out there to enlighten this issue?

Achtung! Better check engine compartment as Iylia mentioned. Also under the rear seat. Common issue on BMW. I solved all these prob on my ex E39.

Check the fuel tank seals under your rear seat bench. Really easy to take out the seats, just pull it up. You'll see the fuel tank cover underneath.
