Newbie - Z3 soft top hydraulic arm

Hi,I have a broken hydraulic arm, the one which supports the soft top when being lowered/raise located behind the left passenger seat. My mechanic informed that welding the ball joint would not last long as there is wear/tear when the top is lowered/raised. Don't do it much often though. Is there anyone with same issues? Replacement cost? I have read a few forums in the states that the lowering of the roof is much easier without this arm. not sure coz has not had it in working condition.CheersChris
