Not the DOHC 16v M42.. it's the SOHC 8v M43..

M40 SOHC 8v (found in E30 318i and pre-95 E36 318i)

M43 SOHC 8v (found in post 95 E36 318i)

M42 DOHC 16v. Have similar intake manifold to the M43 but can see the difference in the cylinder head size.
Found in pre-96 318is and 318ti)

M44 1.9l DOHC 16v
Similar to the M42 but uses OBD2 instead of OBD1 and MAF instead of AFM.
Found in post-96 318ti, 318is and some Z3. However, most 1.9 Z3 we have here in malaysia are fitted with the SOHC M43TU 1.9l...

Bonus pic.
This is a Z3 with the M44 1.9l engine fitted with a Downing Atlanta supercharger boasting the power to 190hp from 140hp..

Z3 uses the M44... But then M42 is the preferred engine for those wanting to mod further...

M42 DOHC 16v. Have similar intake manifold to the M43 but can see the difference in the cylinder head size.

Bro fabian

Can you post the pic of the M42 again, I cant see the pic... I am guessing it probably looked exactly like the M43 but just need ot be sure... :embarassed:

Thanks!

I think Fab's E30 is having the M42. He did a post a picture of his engine bay in another thread a few days back.

Photo was linked from somewhere in the vast vast space called the world wide web... :p Probably the link is dead...

M43 is SOHC lah (Single OverHead Cam), the cylinder head is smaller...
The M42 looked similar to like tthe M44 which is the last pic which is a DOHC (Double OverHead Cam)...

The M43TU is also available in the prefacelift E46. It's 1.9 with MAF plus other small tweaks

Correct me if I m wrong - But the M43TU is 8 valves & not as good as as the M42 (with 16 valves) rite?

thks

hi all....
i wan to ask

between M42 and M44 which one is better?
the M44 is a newer engine right?
but i saw many ppl converting engine, they prefer M42

both oso good but M42 has better mod potential being OBD1..
M42 has forged steel crankshaft with 8 counter balances.
M44 has cast iron crankshaft with 4 counter balances.

If you're not mod kaki, either one oso work...

i believe if u search hard enuff in www, you will most mods r done on m42. fab has given the reason and difference between them. :).
