few months back i did swap my 318is m42 flywheel and clutch set wit a m40 flywheel together with the clutch set..it feel lighter n nice to drive now..i believe most of the m42 guru has done this..i was just was just wondering..since i m using the m40 flywheel, will the m42 clutch plate can u be use instead?why would i want this?it seems like the clutch plate from m42 is lighter since there is no spring attach to it.will it fit or work gurus?thank u..

Just my own experience. My E36 325 were running getrag 220 with M40 single mass flywheel and M42 style solid clutch (without spring). Why? because my conversion kit I bought come like that. with this setup I got geabox rattle sound when clutch were not pressed. Quite irritating since people start looking at your car whenever you stop at traffic light with "your car got problem" look on their face. Other than that the car run fine and acceleration quite good.
Based on my reading & google, the spring clutch will help absorb vibration from engine pulse if you running solid flywheel. Solid clutch were meant to be used with dual mass flywheel. Recently I have just changed to 9" dual mass flywheel. Bought them from Ebay UK. Install them last Sat with new clutch kit. Result, no more rattle. Nice and quiet.
Some technical stuff from UUC website: http://www.uucmotorwerks.com/flywheel/gear_rattle.htm

wow...thanks for ur informative reply bro...i m using getrag 220 as well..was just thinking to try to make some improvement on it.but clearly as u stated is not goin to be a good idea..hmmm

maybe i should try shaving the flywheel instead..not to much..maybe 1-2kg..i m using m40 flywheel btw.

Just sharing bro.. I learn about it the hard way. Now, I have spare M40 single mass flywheel in my car boot. Adding weight and slowing down my car.
If anyone need spare M40 flywheel, please contact me.
