Hey guys,Quick check for opinions from the sifus here.I've just sent my E39 for a body restoration (repaint, fix some small dents). The guys at the paint shop is telling me that I should take this opportunity to replace my windscreen, which has a small stone chip on it (but had been repaired by the previous owner). What do you guys think? Replace or not? They quoted RM2,700 for the replacement. Is that too pricey?

But should I change the windscreen in the first place?
Seems like a waste of 2700 seeing that the current screen has little wrong with it :(

or you can take it to Dr. Cermin and many other windscreen repair specialist who can somehow "seal" the small chip. You won't notice the chip once it's been sealed. One thing for sure, it cost way way less than 2.7K!

The stone chip has actually been repaired. But the paint shop guys tell me that the screen will very likely break if they try to replace the rubber seal around the glass when they paint the car....:(

Bro if u feel the windscreen still can use and was wasting if replace, so just forget about it. Any how the decision still with your own or instead of changing the wind screen of the amount maybe u can follow the GB of the Multifunction HU,DVD,GPS from bmw7833 LOL..

Apparently there are some forummers here who replaced the rubber seal w/o removing the wshield. I myself saw the guys at Optimum doing it on a e39 w/o removing the wshield. Mine's all brittle and it's long overdue to get it replaced.

If money wise is not a big deal, just replace it in one shot since u repaint the car now. Alternatively, u can consider to opt for local made windscreen which cost around RM1K only.

Guess you're right. Replace now means I won't have to worry about damaging the paintwork if I replace it later.

Small thing though - anyone know where to get all those Airbag warning stickers that BMW pastes all over the original windscreen?

The imported windscreen is a Low E glass, that is why it is more expensive.

Low emmisivity. Which means it reflects IR but allowing visible lights through.

Ah...so it has it's own V-Kool then ;)
Thanks for the info...
If I do change it will definitely be the imported glass.....just hope they won't screw up the installation.....

My friend' mechanic manage to change the rubber seal without breaking the glass, body paint wasn't damage either.

Quick update guys....I've decided to go ahead with the windscreen replacement.
When the paintshop inspected the screen, they found that the screen had started to delaminate - there was a milky white outline around the edges of the screen. If they remove the rubber seal around the screen, I was told, the screen will very likely crack.....guess I'll just have to hold off on buying those new rims for my baby....lol :p

Car is at Weng Seng, Deeps.

Will try to get a pic of the delamination and post it here when I next visit my baby in the paint shop ;)
