Nearly ripped off

Just test-drove an E39 for a friend looking for one. Dealer claimed it was a 2003 520i model and quoted price at 84k. One look and told my friend it was a low spec, pre facelift, at least '99, which means possibly single vanos 2L, and the engine was wayy too harsh. Told my friend to walk away. Goes to show how badly you can get ripped off if you don't know what you're getting yourself into.

perhaps it was a recon manufactured in '99 but imported and registered in Malaysia in '03. so the dealer could be trying his luck to pass it off as a '03 and sell it at a higher price. anyway, your friend must be very grateful to you.
