Can I just swap my E39 523 instrument cluster with one from an E39 M5? Is it just plug and play or there are more steps to be done? Need some advice and help, people...

I believe it's not possible, read it somewhere before that an E39 M5 cluster will fit physically but the programming is not the same, or perhaps it was the connections that would be different.

Sorry bro, but it will never work. For a start, E39 Clusters have to be indiviually coded by a BMW dealer to work with a car and there is not much hope of a coding a V8 instrument cluster to a six- cylinder car.

The connections are actually the same ie. 3 connectors at the rear. All the meters ie. fuel, speedo, rev counter will work. There is no fuel consumption meter on the M5 cluster. Instead, you have an engine oil temp meter which will work if you have the sensor and the plug. Only thing that will not work is the OBC on the main console. When you press the OBC stalk button, you will still get readings on your cluster. You will also see the mileage and dist travelled. But, your main OBC at the centre console on the radio will not work, along with the clock, etc... but the radio and cd will still work. That means you cannot key in any data eg. set speed limit gong, timer, etc... The only way to get the cluster to work is to merge the stock cluster with the M5 cluster. That means taking out the OBC portion of the M5 cluster and replace it with the one from the original cluster. A massive project worth doing if you think 240 km/h on your stock cluster is not good enough.

Thanks gemini for the detailed explanation!

Most of the things I get from e-bay. It is surprising the amount of things that you can find in there, man...Some are quite a bargain but some are just......;)
