bro lionel, can the 413 red label DME ecu work? and can u confirm that a non-ews ecu for M42 is just plug and play without splicing wires and all dat? i've gone thru so much reading but end up with no credible info. Thanks

ADDED: I've gone through further readings to find out that the red label DME 0 261 200 990 and 0 261 203 282 are the ones for E36 M42 without EWS so i reckon those should be the ideal ecu that i need. So now i need a clarification of whether the 413 that comes from a 325/525 will be compatible or not. Anyone?!

413 will not match .............

Take my advice .....Find a non EWS M42 ECU and ur problem will be solve ......

For M42 ecu ....they is too many version .....Pls check the chassis to confirm .......Anything manufacture 94 and below is non ews version .....
 
This came with the M42 engine that I bought today at JB something halfcut in jalan kapar klang. Half-cut uncle said this one no immobilizer.

Link corrected. Spoke to one mechanic today and he told me in kuching Bintawa Auto at Bintawa should be able to sort out this issue. If in KL got one guy that can kowtim it. Hopefully this mechanic dun talk cock la.
 
yes 0261203590 is ews like what i have in my m42 and ive checked also in other forums to be the same...but this one has a red label.....with not an easy task to solve....finally ah wai came to the rescue but with my complete key,radar,black box and silver box with the yellow to all complete,,..otherwise impossible as i was told..
 
No way for me to test if the red label means anything cause I don't have any afm.

Tat ecu is from e36 318is coupe,production year
10/94 so most probably its without ews version...
Year end 94 a bit tricky cos afaik ews started from the year
1995...

Alright guys, heres an update. i've got the non-ews ecu in but to no avail...still no spark and cannot start. from further readings and advice, it could be the crank sensor but the coil pack is also another suspect. have yet to check those two out, especially the crank sensor as its a hassle to take it out. however, i have not ruled out the ecu yet as it. I was prompted to do a diagnosis but unfortunately i couldn't get anyone to do it as they need me to tow the car to their workshop..bla bla bla company policy.. which is another hassle. i guess i will try whatever i can within these few days, otherwise i'll just have to leave it till after cny to do so. gonna test the coil pack on a friends car today if possible. wish me luck guys.

Lionel: just wanna confirm, the non-ews ecu can just plug and play without any wire splicing whatsoever right?just wanna clear that doubt.

kura2: good luck in your conversion. never heard of Bintawa Auto though..anyone care to shed some light?

if not spark at all then might be something wrong some where ........pls check .....

yes ....u no need to by pass anything to plug in the non ews ecu .....just confirmed with the specialist .........

Dear sifus,
My e30 is having m42 convertion too and having cant start issue too. But mine is the non EWS ecu (borch 0 261 200 950)

Below are the current condition of the engine:
-new battery
-new spark plugs
-tried another coil pack
-fuel pump working
-spark presence
-two injectors failed, currently fitted with 4 pcs m40 injector (from e36)

Engine is back firing when I try to crank it. Noticed that the lower intake manifold is black now, before that it was clean. Manage to start my engine once only but it was idling roughly, the engine gives no respone at all when I press on the accelerator pedal.

Update: Before CNY i managed to test the coil pack and everything is working fine. Now I have yet to get an update from my mech about the crank sensor..gonna drop by tomorrow to have things looked at.ECU issue have not been ruled out yet as of now. Another possibility is wiring...as there are no power to the relays according to my mech..could this be due to EWS or wiring error/mistake? worst come to worst, I'll have to send the harness to KL to have it marked. Diagnostics is not possible at the moment cos I don't wanna tow the car here and there and leave the car in the hands of another.

kura2: how's ur conversion? any update? wad else is in plan?
 
Mine going at kura2 pace :(. The mech tested to put in engine and gearbox in and said mounting need to modify cause i'm using m20 gearbox. Hopefully exhaust manifold will clear the steering thingy. Else maybe ask him to modify gearbox mounting instead.

Better to source for a M50 gearbox.... It fits the M42 with no issues... but need to change rear diff ratio...
 
measured the crank and cam sensor impedance today, reading as below: -
crank: 550 ohm
cam sensor: 1278 ohm

Gonna test on the injectors and FPR these few days.
