err..
can i say M20B20 - not bad..
can outrun M40 - if you know what to do with it..
can..?

sure laaa .. 6 pistons vs 4 pistons ....

4 pistons gunning on 6 pistons - aaa ... something to look at ...

M20B20 Sucks if you ask me! Wouldnt even consider it. Better to try to get the IS M42 if you just want some fun. If you want power then WHAT"S YOUR BUDGET? But an M50 conversion is a good consideration.

somehow this rings a bell.....hahaha:D

yeah, i've seen an m40b18 pull away from m20b23:eek:

and the driver was non other than ......***ahem......:p

i think we all know what m40b18 can do with m20b20.

Whether which is engine is faster or whether can outgun which car, i think it all depends on the driver and etc etc.

I would suggest, to see real life of m40b18 and m20b20 perform together. I m sure if you call for a tt for this two lovely type owners to meet together, i m sure they will be.

blur lagi aar..
which one is better..?
m20b20 or m40b18..?

m20b20 (1990cc) = 127hp @ 6000, 164 Nm @ 4300
m40b18 (1796cc) = 114hp @ 5500, 165 Nm @ 4250

explain sikit mr. sifu.. :D

let me ask you a question.....

1. how much are you willing to spend(RM?) on modding your engine???

answer this question and your 1st and 3rd question can be answered.

I dont think there is such a thing as better in this case. They are both different and evenly matched at the same time.

But if cost is a factor, the M40 has the advantage because petrol consumption on the M20B20 is pretty bad if you ask me. The slight premium you pay for the B20s road tax is also another thing to consider. But for everything else I think they are pretty evenly matched. The 2 extra cylinders on the B20 doesnt really get you very much LOL.

They are also different enough because the B20 is a six pot and correct me if I am wrong but if you are after the coupe shape its probably easier to get one in B20 form. For some people these are must haves.

My 2cents.... find the best car your budget will allow regardless of whether it is an M40 or M20 and go from there.

If you are into real performance.... they are both ultimately the wrong choice..... you want the B25 or the M50/52 then..... in which case you'd better start a new thread :D

btw which one is easier to turbo-charge? M20B20 or M42B18? :D :D :D

"sifu jipster"???????? I must insist that you not address me in this manner. I feel deeply disturbed as I am not worthy of such a title :)

Anyway, from what I understand, the cost and trouble involved may not be worth your while i.e. result you get may not be comensurate with time/money taken.

I read somewhere recently that if you get a nice healthy M20B25 engine and put in some headers or cams (or both) you are already looking at maybe 185-190bhp while a 2.7 stroker conversion could get you 210bhp and both would probably be more reliable in the long run coz they would still be operating within their design specs.

190/210bhp is already plenty powerful on our roads or even for track. It may not be a scooby or an evo but they are not bmws either.

If I had the M42B18, I would not want to turbocharge it... NA is good enough in my books.

Ok TQ Sifus..does the transplant include having to install the wiring looms fr the M42 or will a simple engine swap suffice?

I believe if you care to start a new thread and ask advice on the things you want to do, i am sure you will get a lot of help/replies from the knowledgable forumners.
Many petrolheads here are passionate about thier engines.

Thanks for all the tips.

Actually I was looking for an M42B18 E30 for quite sometimes but it is very very hard to find. That's why I turn to M40 and M20. After reading all this, cannot decide already.

Frankly, I just need an E30 with plenty of "pick-up" when I need it (especially at traffic light), and don't drink too much fuel when leisurely driven.

Thx

E30s with M42B18 here are mainly converted ones. Only the original E30 318is (2 doors) comes from the factory with the M42B18. However, in the USA, all the Post 89 318i and 318is used the M42 engine and there is no M40 there.

Anyway, go for a test drive and u would know wat to expect.

That's what I've been looking for...the rare 'is'.

It is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Don't mean to discourage you but to help you realise your aspirations, look at the e36 'is'. It is an updated version of the M42B18.
