I have found this entry on m3forums.net while digging around the internet to help a fellow forummer.Might be useful for Japanese spec car owners...to have their radio frequency fully working in Malaysia without the use of booster or adapter.Basically the aim of this is to change the 'AREA' from 'JAPAN' to either 'EUROPE' or 'OCEANIA' in the radio service mode. If you are able to change the area then your radio should work perfectly.Try this out and let me know if it'll work for you guys.[Note: Unfortunately won't work on all cars as I understand it]Long but it will helpSound System, Cruise, Alarms, MonitorsNovember 2004 Technical ServiceSUBJECTProcedures to Enter the Radio Service ModeMODELAll vehicles produced after 09/2001Refer to SI B65 05 99 for information on how to enter the Service Mode on vehicles built prior to 09/2001.PROCEDURESE39 (5 Series) without Navigation systemE46 (3 Series) without Navigation systemE53 (X5) without Navigation systemE83 (X3) without Navigation systemE85 (Z4) without Navigation systemC53/CD53 (with or without MID)1. Changed the HU to satnav unit.

So did you change you HU to Japan Sat Nav Unit? (which is unusable in Malaysia)

That confuses me.

Or unless I'm thinking this in absolutely the wrong way..let me get this straight.

You have Japan businees CD HU, corrected the radio frequency using the above instruction or similar.

Then you changed the head unit to Nav unit, keeping the Japanese radio tuner?

Hi..would anybody know if this method would work for a Japan Spec E90 radio?

I have done this to my collegue Jap spec E90 and successful. Switch on the radio and press the 'M' button for few second until the setting mode appear. You need to just scroll the setting by pressing the < > button until area mode appear. Then change from 'Japan' to 'oceania' then it's done. It should work with any business or BMW professional HU except for model that come with I drive.
