original E30 318is is almost non-existent here... However there are some E30 318i converted to 318is..

Which one better to use? Well, depends what you're looking for. Both have its own merits and shortfalls. Even in the US, there are 2 camps on 318is vs 325i.

Personally, having driven a converted E30 318is for the past 6 years, i have only good things to say.. It's basically a pump-petrol-and-go car for me. It's my daily drive, took it up north and down south numerous times. At least 20 track days. Engine have been able to withstand my abuse throughout... No major breakdown apart from the normal wear and tear parts replacement.

M40 to M42 is easier to do... can even retain the M40 gearbox... Mounting all same...

Young man, m20 more power, M42 more fun and robust....both are deadly when driven well.

M20 thirstier than the M42 tho......

I have owned both with my e30 and e36.

In terms of maintenance and durability, the m42 wins hand down. It's twin cam with timing chain and the engine revs happily to 6900 stock standard. On the e30, the power is sufficient with good chassis balance.

The only thing I like bout the m20 is the inline 6 engine but it's more temperamental, more so if it's l-jet engine management system. The 325 with motronic is smoother.

If it were me, I would go with the m42;)

Ok will do, as long as you tell him I said so, I think no problem lar...

Besides, the M42 has 20yrs difference in technology compared to the M50, the fact that the M42 uses a timing chain is argument enuf....

tutup mata dan pilih m42. .

master fab will have all the answers for ur past, present and future questions abut m42.

Quick question, does the M42 comes stock on a certain year of the e30? Or is it the stock engines for the e36 318.

Now..is it hard to source for a 318is? What are good places to look for an e30 in Malaysia?

I've looked at classified magazines and in the papers but there aren't many (if at all). I'm also a regular lurker on the cars for sale section here :p
