hello all,Im wondering if its worth buying a e23 in pretty good condition for 4k ? . The road tax has been changed to classic status and i think every year would be roughly RM850.However it I will need to renew the classic status in 2010. Will it be hard to renew ? Apart from that will it be hard to find parts for the engine say if something goes wrong later on ? Do let me know. Thanks RegardsAnthony

i am not familiar with classic status road-tax. perhaps others here can help. as for your purchase of the E23, i suppose it all depends on how good the condition is.. i.e. if it is road-worthy and no terminal rust, 4k is a good buy. as for engine parts, there are always options to keep the car running well.

ah thanks alot for your input. yeah i saw the road tax letter. car is rated as classic. Another thing im curious about is how much fuel does this e23 consume ? say i pump RM60 / 33.333 liters. Can it last me around 300 - 350km ? Its an auto.

A blonde walks into a pharmacy and asks the pharmacist for some bottom deodorant. "Sorry, beijing massage don't sell bottom deodorant," the pharmacist replies, struggling to keep from laughing. "But I always buy it here," the beijing massage says. "I bought one last month." Thinking quickly, the pharmacist suggests, "I don't know what you bought before, so maybe shanghai massage can bring in the empty container next time." "Sure," the blonde replies. "I'll bring it with me tomorrow." The next day, the blonde walks into the shop again and hands the pharmacist an almost empty deodorant stick. "This is just a normal deodorant," the pharmacist tells the blonde, "You use massage shanghai under your arms." "No, shanghai massage is not," the blonde answers, "it says so here: To apply, push up bottom."

it seems we have another joker.

i see you signed up 2 years ago but never posted before. kindly introduce yourself in the newbie section, and ask about the consumption from those running 3.5's..

haha didnt really bother. Planning to restore the car up nicely maybe some new seat covers. Been looking for pictures on this fella cant really get much. Just saw some with really nice seats . wonder how much those cost.
As for car the engine looks good and most fine profiles in bonnet is still visible. Accident free he told me.

yeah was planning to get an e30 2 years back but didnt really get serious. will introduce my self there later today yeah ?

With that amount, you can't get wrong. If you like the car look and engine is good, than don't think twice. It is old engine, 3500cc, you would expect a little bit heavy on consumption especially in city drive. Highway you might probably get 10KM/Liter @100KM/H. After all this is vintage car and cheap investment, as long as you enjoy it! Part is not really a problem with M30, you still can get them around. Good Luck & Enjoy!!

A few requirements to have your car changed to classic status:

1.The vehicle must be at least 25 years old

2.Vehicle must be in tip top, original condition(no Recaro seats,Momo steering wheel, aftermarket exhaust,etc.etc.Even the engine must be original, no 2JZ Twin Turbo conversion here)

3.You must have two other cars under your name in which you pay regular road tax rates.

If you meet the above requirements, you have to first take pictures of your car(JPJ will need them for their own record keeping). Then, you have to take it to JPJ Bahagian Teknikal to have it inspected and certified for authenticity. If they approve, they will send the final documentations to the Head Minister of JPJ to have it signed and for a certificate to be made.

Note: The Classic Car Status will have to be renewed every three years. You will have to go through the above procedures again when the Status expires. Also, the Classic Car Status is NOT transferable to another name. You said this car already has the Classic Car Status certificate, but if and when you actually purchasse it, you have to reapply the Classic under your name as the original certificate will be null and void upon ownership transfer.

Hope that helps.

the classic car status road tax is a joke and a waste of time...i dont see the point of it...if someone can afford three cars...m sure he's not worried abt the roadtax of the third...and besides people who buy old cars usually like to customize it to a certain extent...i feel if jpj are seriously going to offer classic roadtax reduction it should be based solely on the age of the car and if its roadworthy or not! In your case, ur better off finding some papers of a lower cc scrapped e23 and changing your chassis and engine number to match...if not then there's always the option of actually changing the engine to a lower cc one....if ur worried about power loss then one of the japanese engines could be a good way to go...but the way i see it is, unless you have alot of time and money to spare messing around with the car...its not a worth buy...e23 parts are all but extinct...even though u may still find some m30 parts...

I;m guessing you;ve not driven a good condition e23 before... Am in the process of going thru the classic car status for my 728i...

HA!!! "Is it worth getting a good e23 as a classic car"...= a question I keep asking myself as I'm am / was also interested in one !

heres my 2sen
1) shape: Avg. personally I like the shark nose, but frankly bec it's a 4 door it will prob never truely be a classic as in highly sought after
2) useability: excellent. it still a comfortable car, that can easily keep up with modern traffic. handling is still decent(for it's age) acceleration/torque even with the 2.8ltr is still good and with powersteering windows etc it still very "modern"
3) economy: fuel usuage!! Really high.. does not matter if you go for 2.8 or 3.2 or 3.5 it will just be high or higher. do NOT expect Rm120 to last you more than 450 kms.. it will prob last you >> in summary. the e23 is ole skool BUT if you wanna run a stylish, reliable car with excellent image that is still "nice to drive" for under RM15K. and can tahan high road tax and fuel then I would say go for it....

Rottieboy,

I agree with your statement below

"in summary. the e23 is ole skool BUT if you wanna run a stylish, reliable car with excellent image that is still "nice to drive" for under RM15K. and can tahan high road tax and fuel then I would say go for it...."

However, this would also applies to the newer model which is the E32.
