BMW Malaysia recommended Castrol SLX 0W30. Is that too thin? I am currently using it for the valvetronic N42. For 6-potters, they are recommending Catrol RS 10W30 (i think).Any ideas bout Torco oils? I heard they are pretty steep in price.Share ur thoughts.

It's strange that BMW M'sia recommends "winter" grade oil. If I remember correctly, the 0W-30 grade is only good for operating temperature somewhere much less than 100deg.C. One can check the API or SAE website for the exact operating temp range. The viscosity of 0W-30 is already so low at room temp when I compare it with 10W-30.

0w-30 it not thin, average. We measure by viscosity, the higher it is (30 or 60), the better it perform in extreme hot temperature. Castrol RS has a rating of 10w-60. One of the highest in the market. I'd been with it since years back. Price is reasonable, RM120 per 4 litres. In our tropical climate, the front rating (0w or 10w) has no effect at all. Hope this helps ;)

But why does BMW Malaysia recommends 2 different engine oil grade for a 4 pot and a 6 pot?...kinda weird..

Hmm..what I u'std is that BMW recommends Castrol lubricants..

Eh Castrol SLX is long life oil, this is normally used for the M-engines. For valvetronic engine you can use any fully synthetic motor oil but they must be of ACEA A3/B4 specifications.
ACEA A3 - For long drain interval

Does that mean that 05W-30 is less capable compared to 10W-60 but how come the 05W-30 is more expensive.... sorry about the darf question just need to know...

But for me.. when buying engine oil, I will go for the one with the best free gift :yahoo:

Found a "marketing" guide from API... it does not contain technical details about what ?W-? is good for what temperature range.

API motor oil guide

My 4x4's service manual indicated the following motor oil grade selection depending on temperature range:
0W-30 for temp upto 60F (16C) only.
10W-30 for temp from 22F (0C) onwards.

Price wise both are sold at the same price in WalMart in the US.

Well, u could conclude that. A lower end rating will work poorer than a higher ones. Hmm...the reason y 0-30 is more expensive could numerous. From brand marketing to promo that comes with or the dealer who sells it. Different dealers offer diff price. Or could be due to the 0w & 10w.
