I found my iPod had similar issues before because some CDs were not well recorded (hehe pasar malam ones or downloaded from the Net) but no issues with original ones. Changing the output volume on the iPod will not have any effect if you are using the iPod connector and not the headphone output. Last option is to check on the input level on the HU itself.
Agree, sound distortion can be caused by many factors one of which is the source.
And correct, my test on the iPod showed that when connected via the interface, the controls of the iPod is rendered inoperative and the volume setting, the master volume setting, equalizer and the sound leveller does not impact the output . The Hu takes over the controls.
