I bought my 523 (2005 manufactured) in February from AB's used division. They promised to fix up little matters when I took delivery and paid up. 1 month warranty is up.After the servicing, I feel the idling is still not smooth. I can feel slight vibration when I place my hands on anything in the car. I feel embarassed stopping at traffic lights because sometimes my commercial clients will asked if my car need servicing or not.Worse part is when my driver drives and I am at the back with a client and we both can see the front passenger seat shaking slightly. The car is in D postition.I am fed up. My brothers Mercedes Benz S280 has none of this shaky problems! Can anyone point out what I should be looking for to rectify the situation? I brought the car to a mechanic in Sunway and they charged me for this and that but still the problem remain! somebody help me.Thank you.from RamasamySubang Jaya

sorry to hear this bro but have you gone back to complain at AB?

btw you may want to intro yrself in the newbie section before you started asking questions..

welcome to BMWCM!

Gearbox mounting izzit? or Engine mounting... these are wear and tear items that require replacement just like your tyres... they won't last forever.

Hope I'm right or else, good luck!

AB, good point on engine & GB mounting, but 2005 is a very new car.

Have you isolated the vibration is from engine, gearbox, or only when air-cond is on? You mentioned vibration when in D, what about neutral?

If its the engine, it could be a sign of an ignition coil failing. Even 1 unit fail can cause a very bad shaking and vibration on the engine.

Steps to get your mechanic to check
1. Check ignition coil for spark plugs. Can switch the ignition coil between cylinder to test. (I just replaced 1 ignition unit of 6, cause engine shake when started)
2. Check spark plug point & also sign of engine oil on spark plug?
3. While checking spark plug, watch out for engine oil seeping through as well. A condition means cylinder head gasket need replacement. Replace the rubber seal for the nuts & bolts area as well.
4. Check MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor.
5. If above still don't fix it, may want to try compression test on the cylinders. This I have not done for my e39.

Cheers.

First thing first, I will check your idle control, since you said it only happen in D.
When the car is not moving, with footbrake apply, at D mode, what is your engine idle speed (in RPM) ?

Besides the advices mention by CHAIKS, you might want to look into:
1. Vacuum lines
2. Vacuum leaks
3. Idle control valve
4. Brake booster line (leaking ?)

Hope this help

Ramasay,

Click on the private message, on your top right. I sent a recommendation of the mechanic that can help you. He fixed my ignition coil problem + the cylinder head gasket replacement. Don't worry, he is not Nathan from MPowder.

cheers.

I think you have to bring back to AB and asked them to cehck thorughly

Don Franco,

You've got pm.

You can check what part was replaced in my blog. Its right down there in my signature below.

Good luck.

chaiks, may i know which mechanic did u recommned?

thanks

as long as you made the report and complain before the 1 month warranty is up, they should continue to rectify the problem until its gone, regardless if it takes 1 year. You have to bang table with BMW to get things done.

523 bring more worries $$$$

Thank you so much CHAIKS. Thank you to others as well.

It was the coil. Apparently when starting the engine, my driver tells me he could feel some slight tremor when warming in the morning beside in D mode.

I was hoping it could be just one of the spark plug which is not so costly but the mechanic want to change the complete coil rather than the individual. It is going to cost close to 1k. But I have to get it fixed.

He also found the air filter clips missing on one side. There were dirt and
a tiny leaf inside the filter. They don't sell clips alone so they replaced the whole air filter unit, filter and also cleaned the intake valve. The cost is nearly 1k.
Yesterday there was a elec fan failure warning in the dash. The mechanic said the fan is working but the fan controller need replacement.

I forgot to mentioned my car was delivered with continental sport 2 tyre. It was on Goodyear nct 5 when I tested the car. The car now feel very tail bouncy on small holes or unsmooth roads. Is there better tyres than this ?

Gosh...what's next

No problem. Glad to be of help.

You should insist on changing the problematic unit. Well...I presume you didn't send to my recommended mechanic.

I'm not sure which clip you're talking about. Need to have a look at mine.
Interesting, I didn't realize that there is a warning on the dash for elec fan failure.

Are you sure its the tyre, and not worn absorber or other suspension part. For all you know, the car was purposely under inflated to mask the suspension flaw.

Cheers. Enjoy the car. I did spent over rm10k after taking delivery of the car. It should be a standard budget for getting a used BMW.

P.S.Sorry for the late reply, can't seem to post lately.

Ramasay,

My sympathies with you.

I bought an 06 525 in Dec 07. Had a lousy delivery experience with Auto bavaria. Now having problems with my incar bluetooth connection and cd player. Sent it in 2 weeks ago for a week and now the problem is back.

Am going to take it back in. Lets see how committed they are to resolving my problem.

We should not have to deal with sub standard after sales service (nor spend RM10k post delivery) on such recent cars approved by auto bavaria!

Anyone from auto bavaria here listening?? Pls get rid of your Proton/Perodua mentality. You are no longer the only BMW dealer in town.

BMW Malaysia if you are lurking, take note that these sort of things affects your brand equity and ultimately sales! Take a leaf from Swedish Marques/Volvo's after sales service.....

Rama, take the back seat where got fun? Drop the driver, grab the steering and plant your leg on her and feel how she fight back!! by the time u reach office/home, very refreshing one.. :top:

Bro, wanna try Ingress? Heard good comments about this new dealer, its a 4S centre. Hope Ingress can resolve your issues.

Hi,

My case is almost similar as well. I did feel engine vibration when starting the car in the morning, and this vibration was more like a shake actually. Also, when the car is in D or P, whenever the aircond is started, I feel vibration on the steering, but when the AC is off, then the vibration disappears. Whenever I start driving, I dont feel the vibration anymore, but whenever I stop, the vibration comes back. My idle rpm is some where around 700. Is this normal? What could be the problem ?

Sorry to divert...but I guess our problems could be similar.
