As I'm hunting down a good used E90, I realized I need to change completely the way I look at car. For example RFT. While its sound good on paper, I also read many owner replace the RFT with conventional tyre once the RFT is due for replacement.Say you kena nail, how many km you can drive? the thought of being stranded with flat tyre with family in middle of no where not very comfy feeling for me.

Hi Welcome to the forum!

To answer your question, if a RFT is losing pressure or punctured, the manufacturer's recommendation is to drive it not more than 80km/hr, and it should last you at least 50km, which is sufficient to get you to tire shop or at least to a petrol kiosk. Having said that I have known of folks that drove more than 150km on punctured fun flats.

Cheers

I ran mine for 3 days. Drove at 100km/h (max) and for about 60km. Didn't have time to drive to tyre shop to repair the puncture. Semua OK. :top:

It depends on the amount of air loss, gamenoob. I would advise caution if the tire is repairable and you want to save it. When I had the zero pressure puncture last year, I drove it home at about 60-70kmh and when I got home the tire was too hot to touch! The less air there is inside, the more the bead, walls and thread have to work supporting the car, hence the heat generated. Excessive heat will cause ply separation and make the tire unsafe to use.

I drove it to the tire shop at about 30kmh and when I got there, it was still hot, but at least touchable. Total distance driven was about 50km, but it was a goner anyway.

Most people change to conventional tyre because its cheaper. Don;t forget if you have a flat you wont get anywhere on a conventional tyre. If you buy the kit you might as well buy a pump for the rtf too.

Me on the otherhand love the idea having the RTF as with the roads here in Malaysia which is comparable to the ones in Congo at the very least when you go over a pot hole your chances of your rims being disfigured is much smaller:cool:

Bridgestone's recommendation: http://www.bridgestone.com.au/tyres/technologies/rft/faq.aspx#2

Q: How far can I drive after I am alerted to a deflated tyre?
A: Bridgestone Runflat tyres are typically capable of travelling for a maximum of 80km at 80km/h after a tyre suffers deflation. However, the vehicle manufacturer may specify a different speed or distance for RFT tyres fitted to specific vehicles and owners should consult their vehicle handbook for details.

Conti's recommendation: http://www.conti-online.com/generat...es/themes/extended-mobility/ssr-tyres-en.html

The SSR's reinforced sidewall enables the car to continue on its way at a maximum speed of 80 km/h (50 mph) for up to
80 km (50 miles), depending on road conditions and vehicle weight.

Can you reuse the RFT after puncture? Or its a done deal each time? Based on real life experience it seem if the wear was not too bad during flat, you can re-use it...

Tire companies will never tell you that you can repair a puncture, so those speed and distance limits are meant to tell you how far you can go to reach a tire shop to change it. But to me, only the bead and walls of an RFT are different from a non-RFT. The thread is the same, so if the puncture is in the thread and it's pluggable, why not?

That's why I recommend driving with caution if you want to save the RFT tire, based on my real life total air loss experience. You don't want the heat generated to destroy the tire internally.

Yes, u r right and we all do! Not because it remain 100% safe but to save some moolah and the environment.. :p

All mended punctured tyres increases the risk of tyre failure because u won't know the extend of the damage, despite patched back. Risk of tyre failure goes up and that's why SC never recommend patching of tyres, even conventional tyres, just to be safe.

Try use the internal patch as oppose to the RM5 external plug patch just to be on the safe side.

I got a puncture abt 5mths ago and i did an internal patch. So far the tyre is still ok and no issues with balancing.

Had a puncture many months ago. SC recommended an internal patch. However, since my tayar nearly botak already, changed to new la. But that shows that internal patch is a non issue IF puncture is on the thread area. If kena sidewall, say bye bye la (same as any other tire!)....

Had done internal patch twice. The last one was total flat, drove to nearest pump station, from Concorde to Shell Jalan Ipoh. Lasted till botak... Actually, no hard and fast rule. Only you can determine at point of incident the severity of the damage that can be translated to your confidence level.

Here's what BMW says officially:

http://www.bmw.com.my/com/en/general/bmwowners/after_sales/runflat_tyres.html

How long can I drive on a deflated Run-flat Tyre? This depends on the amount of people travelling in the vehicle and if the boot is fully loaded:

* With low loads, one or two persons without luggage:
Approximately 200 km at a maximum speed of 80 kmh

* With moderate loads, two persons with full luggage or four persons without luggage:
Approximately 140 km at a maximum speed of 80 kmh

* With a full load, while towing a trailer or four persons or more with full luggage:
Approximately 40 km at a maximum speed of 80 kmh

I had 3 punctures at the same RFT tyre in different locations within the duration of 7 months..I travel a lot and sometimes speed the car at 230++kmh..Touch wood I had no issues unil today. Total of 5 punctures at 2 of the tyres..Next week I'm getting new tyres simply because the old ones are already nearly 'botak'..So dont worry.. as of my personal experience you can still use the punctured tyre once you have patched it.. and I only use the RM5 patch...still no issues.. This is my second set of tyres.. the first original RFT was punctured 4 times..3 at the same tyre and still no issues,...I wonder why some of us are too scared to use the same tyre once puntured.. have faith...if not non RFT are bound to explode sometimes and cause death accidents...at least the manufacturers are confident that if you blow up a RFT tyre it would still run..see the Bridgstone RFT commercials...anyway this is my 2 sen worth of opinion...yours might be different..
peace no war bros...

My one-month old car had a puncture today! and luckily for the RFT, I could still drive to attend an important meeting, else I would have spent some valuable time changing it!
Once the meeting was over, quickly took it to AB and they settled it within 30mins and off again I went, vrrrrooommmm..

i still have doubts about RFT if you travel outstation alot. imagine if you are in the middle of no way and you cant find tyre shop within the range and the RFT is giving its way, what will you do?

i was hoping that they still provide a spare tyre for the e90, just in case.

btw, i am quite new to RFT... :)

RM5 to patch/fix your RFT tyre is cheap! I had about 2 punctures on my RFT, sent it to lim Tayar and paid rm35 each time.

Ouch! They've always been mercenary with charging. Wonder why people still go there.

i dunno how i kena sidewall (both rear tayar) i think got ppl sabo la.. workshop at glenmarie say this say that internal susah..blabla.. a lot bmw owner aso use external patch.. oklor.. kasi external patch.. that was few days before CNY.. until now still ok geh.. i max only 150kmh

Don't worry. Just find a gas station and pump up the tire, reset the computer and you are good to go! Next morning, in your free time, go to a tire shop to patch the tire. Easy!
