Started getting this error message on my E60 2 weeks ago. Researched the forum and Possible causes of the problem:
  • battery
  • alternator
  • IBS Sensor cable
  • any electrical component drawing high current
Action taken:
  1. Alternator - replace new 5 months ago
  2. Battery - replaced new on Saturday 5th Dec 2015
  3. System reprogrammed after installing new battery (Din 100)
  4. Wireman checked for any "current leak" - no leak detected
Sadly, error message pops up every morning after car being idle overnight.
No error message other times of the day when the car is started.

Questions:
  1. How do I check (before replacing) if the IBS needs to be replaced ??
  2. can I drive car normally without causing any/further damage to electrical components
( I understand from AB service advisor that should we replace our battery (original) at AB, they recommend that we also change the IBS cable)

I changed my batery at wearnes segambut an authorize bmw 3s center... no need and no advise to change ibs cable

Quite sure there's still 'current leakage' somewhere.. Better go to other wireman to have a look..

Guys & Gals,

any leads for a wireman that that might be able to troubleshoot possible current leakage

rgds

I seriously don't think wireman would be able to troubleshoot the current leak. Our e60 is full of sensitive electronics and sensors and you may even ended up with more electrical problems as wireman tend to cut wires and test here and there. Our CM Beemerback used to have a e60 and had similar problem and has resolved it. You pm him and seek his advice.

Just an update.

Had the car checked once again for current leakage. Clean bill of health.
My regular mechanic changed the IBS cable. It has been 3 early morning starts and NO error message.
Always feel slight apprehension when turning the car over.
So far signs are good.

Shanbala,

Do your car comes with comfort access or keyless entry ?

my car which is a diesel version can hear sometimes emitting soft high pitch sound from the engine bay when ignition is off.

It is doing something but I am not sure what.
