Dear Malvin,

Just read your thread. Very sorry about your ordeal.

I agree that you should get a second opinion but based on the sympthons ie high engine oil consumption its got to be the engine.

It most probably would entail the mechanic opening up the engine to ascertain the extend of the damage.

I hope its only the piston rings. If the engine cylinder wall is worn and in such cases mechs can fix it with a "sleeve" or a sheet. Not sure abt your enginethough. That may also entail looking at the pistons etc.

Whatever, you have no choice but to go for a "heart surgery".

If it gets really bad , you have two choices :-

i) Recon/ Half Cut engine:
ii)New engine

I do hope however that it can be solved with an overhaul ie piston rings etc.

I do understand how you feel but having gone through a bad experience all I can tell you that it happens but anything can be fixed so dont despair.

If you have the service records of the car pls check the service history. I suspect the car must have been neglected. Pls share the history with us. You can get it from the service booklet which should be in the glove compartment or you can check with Auto Bavaria.

Auto Bavaria can also verify you mileage by checking you key. The just need to place your key into a machine and it reads the mileage etc.

Do keep us informed.

hi there anxious...

Thanks a lot for your feedback ....... i am so glad i have so many friends out there to help me....... i really do hope i can get it fix ya.......... but so sad that my previous owner did not keep any service records ....... thats bad news i guess...... sad sad.........i feel cheated..........

hi melv,

white smoke? smell it, if got burnt oil kind of smell. if not, its only a water vapour. but from yr finding on yr oil level decrease, it may come from yr oil sump.

oil may enter yr cylinder thru yr piston rings or valve. if from valve, overhaul will do (cross yr finger), but if from rings.... new/recond engine needed. cannot rebore like mat rempit..hehehheh

If oil starts to enter yr cylinder, u may experience inconsistant RPM or if the leak is big, yr engine will suddently dead. check yr plugs, u can find which cylinder is in trouble.

Im new in BMW, all these while using Jap's...normally this is what i did.

a new engine would cost me 20 to 30 thousand....... and half cut could cost me 12,000 to 15,000 ..... i hope it is just valve seals ...... that would cost me 2 to 3 grans only....... i am in delima now.........

yes hafizul u are correct.... but i dont experience any power leak.... car power is still good according to my mechanic but it just consumes oil and mechanic have check the plugs and there was no leak there too..........

Hi, I am suffering like u. My N42 engine oso have such heavy oil burning problem. The fastest way is doing overfaul. But very costful. I found this website from this forum. www.auto-rx.com. Pls go through the website for more details. I currently using this treatment for my engine. Afterb1500km just top up some oil. still monitoring.

hi there....... ur suggestion sounds interesting....... where can i by the auto-rx oil to try it out? is it available in malaysia?

Mal,

First get a realiable mech. I think the guys in KL may be able to give you some good advise on who to see.

Next, get the mech to do a compression test.

I think with the rate of engine oil consumption, you may have no choice but to open up the engine to get to the root of the problem.

I understand how you feel, been there mate, but I learnt the hard way that buying a second hand car is always a gamble esp if you arent experienced.

Having just bought the car , you got two options:-

i) sell the car at a loss:
ii)Fix her up.

If you want to fix the car i think you have no choice but to get to the root of the problem by opening up the engine to inspect the engine.

Based on my basic understanding of a car, the engine is divided into 2 main parts namely:-
i) the cylinder head:
ii)the engine block

The cylinder head contains the valves and valve seals. It can crack if the car overheats as happen with my car and I had to change it just after getting the car as my mech did not pick-up this problem when I asked him to inspect the car b4 I purchased it.

Now the engine block has the pistons and pistons rings. Normally heavy engine oil consumption relates to something wrong here. A friend of mine who had to top oil every 2 weeks or so recently had to change his piston rings.

The car may have been poorly maintained with irregular oil changes affecting either the piston rings , pistons or the bore.

The only way to be sure is "open heart surgery".

Correct me if I am wrong guys.

hi there...... would really appreciate that if u can help me on this....... just went on a long trip to kedah this raya.......my car consumes 1 litre of engine oil after running for 1500 km.. i use semi synthetic motul oil 15w-50...... what shoud i do next ....... that is too much ya...........
there is an article on NST CBT today 5/10 about reducing engine oil. your current oil viscosity is actually high enough to temporary solve the excess oil consuming problem. however, looking at it, its not helping either. did you try to get a second or maybe third opinion from other mechanic?

my car is 2002 model facelift...... run for 79000 km........ dont know its true or not..........
in my opinion, i dont smell anthing fishy. to confirm, there is a device that you can plug-in with your key and it will show you the actual mileage recorded in its memory. i remember one of the member/forumer even took the picture of the device and posted it. but, sorry cant find the link

What the pro's said is absolutely true. the white smoke come from the oil.. Thats why u require oil to be topup. go for overhaul i guess. If u dont belive just place a board at the exaust pipe n check the smoke u will agree then..

today i went to the mechanic who assessed my car before buying last month...... told him my problem and he said that engine oil burning is very had to assess unless u drive the car for a week or so...... he said it definitely needs overhauling and told me to go back to the use car guy and try to get some compensation....... a second hand engine would also cost around 12,000 to rebuild one .... a new one would cost 20,000 .... wow BMW.... ow ow ow...... that's all i can say.......:rolleyes::stupid::eek:....... holy ma golly.........!!!!

Hi malvin, u can call Francis on 0122101999 or office no 0379828115, this guy office is located at Kuchai Lama. RM 98 per bottle. Try it out.

thanks wt29

hi there.....thanks mate...... do u think it will help my car? How is your car doing so far?

Hi drmalvin,

Your case is often heard on similar N42 engines, as well as the other member of "not reversing" issue.

N42 parts are more expensive to maintain than the older member of M43 which is a proven robust engine brought forward from the fame E36.

As the rest have pointed out, a top overhaul may be required to solve your problem.

The dealer should at least compensate your repair bills other than saying "we can't check....."

Otherwise, lesson learnt is tht to send a car for a full inspection b4 commiting to a buy.

Good luck and keep us posted.

thanks for your feedback nktob..... yup maybe changing the pcv and valve seals would do the trick......

I had checked with my mechanic .... he said that he had changed the pcv during my last service..... he had also changed some hoses under the manifold........ well , i am gonna try this auto-rx oil.... see if it works..

hey there DRmalvin ..

since you had just purchased it from a used car dealer , why don't you trade it in for a e46 325 ...just say that the 318 is lacking of power and you want to upgrade .....

i think you could loose some $$$ but would solve your headache for once and all .... just pick up a calculator and calculate the figures ....

Malvin,

I doubt if any type of oil can cure your problem but good luck anyway.

thanks for the info regarding the oil........ but i think so far after changing my engine oil to penziol 20w-50 mineral oil ...... it has not been consuming oil and by also adding the Auto-Rx oil which was suggested by wt29...... however i have to monitor this in a few days time..........
