I just got my car, a 2002 318i 2.0 last Friday. Drove straight down to penang as the used car dealer has sent the car for service (flushing, oil change etc).Prob is, when i check out d car before buying, there are no white exhaust smoke. The smoke prob only occur after flushing and the white smokes stays till now...Went to Penang on Friday, left the car in hotel till Sunday (company event) before i drove back. While driving out from Penang island, the engine oil light came out...stopby petronas, notice that m running low on oil. Bought petronas semi syn, fill it up, came back to KL. Drove to office today, went to workshop straight (the one that serviced my car), the mechanic showed me that the oil almost ran out...So, the mechanic filled up the engine again with the one that i bought..used up almost 4liter..n was told by mechanic that it might be piston problem...Need to diagnose further...Any advice on cost and root of prob like this? thanks...it's my 1st continental car...p.s.: other minor probs which are normal for old car:1) a lil bit of cricket sound on rear left part on corners2) steering rack knocking sound on bumpy roads3) super soft absorbers (not issue - can always change)4) a lil bit of leaking on gearbox

Hi Julian, did u check / diagnose the car before you buy? This is serious problem and the dealer should have warranty for this.

N42 engine has a bad reputation for being temperamental in terms of over heating and makan minyan. It's need more TLC compared to N46. Best to send it in for s proper diagnose and inform the dealer abt the issue so they can be accountable for the problem.

to me its quite normal. Maybe your oil seal need a change. Cheap but labour expensive. Have to dismantle the gearbox to fix it. Mine telan abt 1l every 1000km. Have to monitor. Will change the oil seal soon and see how. N42 is quite normal and always telan minyak. Small engine maaa and a bit suffer.

You don't have to dismantle the gearbox to replace the oil seals, just need small hands as its pretty tight squeeze. My N42 doesn't telan as much as yours ,maybe 1 liter after 3000 Kms. The important thing is to regularly check on the water level and hoses.

maybe can consider changing oil type from fully sync to semi sync....those thicker oil like 15w-40

Thanks for the information!
Have spoken to the used car dealer and resend it to the workshop that did the servicing before i got the car. Did that today.
When i check out the car, there isnt any white smoke, i can understand that oil engine 'consume' engine oil, but this much @4liter for about 980km, it's crazy LOL
Worse case scenario, to negotiate with dealer to send it to auto bavaria or ingress

Sorry dude. The reason to dismantle gearbox is to replace the flywheel o rings. My car also have some leak there. Jeffrew: dude, oil seal can diy or not?. Mielo: Any recommendation for 15w 40 oil brand?. :top:

I see, so the main problem might be the gearbox and not the engine for the engine oil loss eh?
The mechanic did notice that there's a bit of leakage on the gearbox

Gearbox oil totally nothing related to engine oil. Gearbox leakage will leaks out gearbox oil or ATF oil not the lubricant oil (engine oil).
U can differential the oil leakage whether is lubricant oil or ATF oil.

The engine oil is leak through the flywheel o rings. Gearbox is not part of the engine. From my info to replace the o rings to prevent leaking, gearbox has to be dismantle to fix the flywheel o rings. The flywheel is situated front of the gearbox connected back of the engine. Correct me if i'm wrong sifus.

For small amount of leaks in transmission fluid, it could also just be a hardened o-ring on the draining bolt.

I see...I thought that the gearbox issue is causing the problem with engine, thus engine oil loss.
Got the point already, the car's still in the workshop called Auto Raco and queuing for my turn to be inspected.

SHoot!!! The engine needs to be overhauled! damn...m gonna make the dealer pay for that since it is promised to be "no (Major) repair needed" n buy and drive

why bro? you may need Consumer Tribunal as u ride is still newly bought from that shop. normally the newly cases like you they will ask the shop to bear the repair cost unlike those who has bought the car for months as it is based on 'used car is to be sold as it is'

Yeah, those buggers said will try to cover full cost..estimated repair cost's about 5-7k at Auto Raco. If the dealers dont wanna cover at least 70-80% of the repair cost, am going to the Tribunal for sure.

Been bz lately so didnt update on the car. Thanks to CNY and so many holidays around the corner, the car's still in Auto Raco. Waiting for parts to be delivered for the engine to be overhauled. Will update on the cost later :)

Not to scare you but AFAIK the consumer tribunal only handle cases worth less than RM25k.

How much did you pay for your E46 2002 if you don't mind sharing?

Cheers
