Well everyone know last few days was pouring like cats and dogs. I was unlucky enuf to be caught in 1 of them. The water was so high my UDM E46 318i died on me. I later send to the workshop they told me that water went into the engine!!!Shit now they say must overhaul the engine and it is estimated to cost around RM10k to 15k.I was puzzled!! So anyone can help me if they is any reliable source or better solution. How much is actually an overhaul cost for a E46 318i anyway? Is the workshop trying to pull a fast 1 on me?

Ask them for engine changed and listen to what they say...

If water got into the engine while it was still running, your engine will seize (Hydrolock), as water does not compress like air does :). Con rods can break, block can crack and sometimes you can see internals sticking out of the engine block.

If you kena, I would suggest a new engine (potong kereta one) instead of an overhaul as it'll likely be cheaper.

What year is your e46? M43 or M44? Anyway, plenty of used engines around..

pls pls chk again what need to be done dont panic just coz one mech say like that. Ask him what is the problem and which part need to be open or really an overhaul may be sometime just wiring problem. Get another mech to chk if not sure.

Both e46fanatic & tkew might b right about your prob. As 4 me, i'd probably think that ur wiring kaput since d recent UDMs have vacuums below d rear seats 4 cooling purposes. Most of d electonic wires r located there, hence d moment u splashed into d pool d vacuum sucked water big-time!! Do check at other places, & we would help u enquring too. Yeah, u should panic la bro, I imagined myself in this situation before & wish X1000 not 2 b in it!! Cheer up ait!!

Well mine is a E46, M43 engine. The engine stil can start after they clear out the excess water. but there is alot of knocking sound.

The mech told me they need to open up the engine to check what need to be replace. Phew.. I did ask them about replacing an engine but the mech was telling me it will be even more expensive.

So how much will a E46, M43 engine potong cost????

The reason I ask you to tell the mech to change the engine is because of these:-

1) It will never surpass cost of overhaul
2) If the foreman wants to cheat you, definitely he will give you all sort of excuses so that you wont opt for the engine change option

e.g: Minor problem only : RM1K repair Tell you need overhaul but never done : Get RM ++K

3) Last longer and works better as overhauled engine will never beat a virgin engine

Correct me if Im wrong

Well I went engine shopping around the cheapest M43TU I can find is RM9K excluding manifold only the engine block. Condition unknown.

So no choice but to overhaul. The workshop told me after overhaul the engine is as good as new!! even provide warranty for it. So decided to overhaul ended up with a bill of RM15k. sigh...

I will list out the parts and price change later when I get my car back..
