Bought my E39 530 from a forumer here last year Nov. I am having problems with my engine where initially i need to top up water once every 6 weeks or so, then 4 weeks or so and finally every 2 weeks or so lately. Brought to my regular mechanic and trouble shoot here and there. Change hose, change radiator also cannot. Finally he suspected the gasket might be burned. So took the engine head out and found out the gasket is burned. The main problem is that he told me this engine head has been skimmed before as previously the gasket has been changed as well. Went to see and found out the gasket are indeed replacement gaskets. Now the problem is according to him, if it is skimmed again, even the thickest gasket which is 0.3mm might not solve the problem and does not guarantee it will work. He recommend to either change the whole head or whole engine. Change the head about rm4k, whole engine might be 9k. Anyone have such problem before? Is changing to new engine the best solution?Thanxs all.

If it is what you had described then changing the whole engine is the best solution.

change head rm4k and whole engine 9k? that is dirt cheap... proceed with either one!

p/s: who is your mechanic?

yup, the engine head for that model is very expensive, and mind you, most chop shops not willing to sell head minus block, better still buy a engine kosong then fit, at least got 1 week warranty. get your mechanic to source it, if you do, then if engine not good, then extra $$ on you. then your bottom half can put for sale that might offset some costs.

cheers..

my e39 m54 is gone.....overheated and boom....stalled.

Towed to BMW mechanic and waiting for early diagnostic.......

So if i'm going M54B30........how deep is the hole on my pocket would be ?

Get ready RM15k bro for a B30.
Or if you would like a B25, my mechanic has a couple of "engine-kosongs".

bazet,

Sorry to hear that. How was it happened? Any symptom before it kaboom?

just got my bill on saturday, pening !!! did it at WP Auto.

Cost as below:

top set = RM530
head gasket = 215
head screw = 125 for 14 nos
retread block screw = 700 for 14 nos
block hose = rm 145.00 for 1, changed 2 nos
radiator = 730 (can someone tell me if this is expensive ?)
coolant = 38
528 cylinder head = rm 3300 (can someone tell me if this is expensive ?)
workmanship = 900

overall cost = lighter wallet and reduced overseas trip..

Loh,

You should have replaced it with another m54b30 engine from chop shop. Prices above you kena chopped.

okay just received info from my mech

Radiator leaked
Can skimmed the head and use thicker gasket

Budget overall 5-6k

So if I want to use b25 head...can I just change the head alone ?

===============
I'm driving alone on sunday morning, spirited drive and confident too because I've spent 500 replacing radiator hoses under the manifold and new waterpump ( another 600 ).......and yet the temp needle suddenly went from middle to read and...warning about coolant temparature and oil press came from on board computer...and while I'm slowing down ..kaboooommmm...no power.

above 5-6k is for B25 head replacement with all others works ? seem like around my pricing that i got. well u can skim once and use a 0.3mm thicker gasket. Will be OK but engine will run slightly hotter due to higher compression as i was told by mech. But temp middle should be still at middle. But if mech skim and did not do a good job, then you can't re-skim twice. You would have to change the top block like what i did (my previous owner skimmed once, no wonder the engine looked so clean when i changed the VANOS seals cause it was chemically cleaned when 1st skimmed). Damn.. i think of it my still frust spending so much... now i just pray my new block is OK !

Been known Albert for years...I don't think so....seems the price is on par with Bazet's mech quotation...if not better...Albert not kaki chopped one..

just came back from the workshop ...well from early diagnostic...they did compression test on all cylinders..and all seems ok. Maybe just change the head gasket + repair the leaked radiator. So if everything ok...i'm going to reroute the $$$ to manual gearbox conversion...their suggestion is to source e46 m3 gb ( 6 speeds ) and the price is around 10k plus and minus......

well if the head does not need skimming.....

well after knowing bazet prices, it look on par. so should be OK. but i just realise i have another problem after the top replacement, duno whether is it related to the engine or not as it wasn't a problem before the replacement. Once i drive at higher speed, 5th gear, engine rev > 3K, i have this metal grinding noise in front. went to Albert on Sat and he suspect the alternator bearing. replace the bearings. but still the same. Anyone has this problem b4?

Well....glad to hear that you feel OK...maybe Albert didn't managed to solve all your problems,or he might be wrong in diagnosed the problems...which all the of mechanics did (admit or not),
I'm not here to defend Albert, I once tried to 'run' from Albert to other workshop which is highly recommended in this forum, ended not just being chopped like hell,enough to say they left me with a miserable life afterwards, so much so I decided no more BMW for me....wish you all the best bro!

bad news, my head need to skimmed.......big hole to my wallet...again
