Hi sifus,

any one here had their UDM undergone a top overhaul?

mine is scheduled for one soon. why? the engine overheating light (yellow then red thermometer light ) came up and the head gasket got burnt.

mechanic said he needs to remove the camshaft and the head and send it for skimming and pressure test.

initially he told me that I need a complete overhaul and even maybe an engine change, all depends on when the head gasket in opened.

views?

sincerely,

i forgot to mention that he suggested two options:

1) overhaul the engine -- takes up to two weeks
2) swap the engine - quicker but involves puspakom and runner fees.

both option will cost around $8K +/- a few grand, deepend on the engine condition.
these options were given to me without opening the oilcover.

any views?

If only the head gasket is burnt, you will only need a top overhaul, which will cost half of what's quoted.

I went thru an engine change on my previous e39 with an M52 engine. After opening up the head only we discovered that piston #6 was holed(a small one) hence nil compression.I decided for an engine chg based on the 10 year relationship that I have with the shop owner and that I know the mechanics that work there pretty well and that they know that I am a DIY guy and am well versed with Engineering in general.
Also I made sure that the shop owner knows what I expect of their work and I got my car back with a very good 2nd hand engine with no issues.

So ,the choice is really yours bro..........

thanks moots.

is it common for the engine to be removed before any work starts?

the problem with the m54 engine is that the block is made of aluminium. if the overheat was bad, the block could be damaged (warped). in my opinion, if that's the case, it's better to change the engine rather than overhauling.

the first thing you should do is to make sure that the block is not affected.
