GPS is not about software alone. You need to have the hardware as well. So if your iDrive is the basic type that does not come with the GPS module then you can never have gps even though you upgraded your software.

There's upgrade path available from various overseas forum, I think closest to us here, BMW Sg forum, has been offering such modification to the 8.8 inch navi I drive. I reckon warranty will immediately void on all your electronics should one made the mod during in warranty period.

You need to have a deep pocket for this upgrade though. At least looking at $10k or more.

guys

the GPS in my ride is not as good as my Garmin. at least, with garmin i can key-in my coordinates which i nomrally get from google-earth but the bmw gps does not have that features. you have to go through the routine....i wonder how the germans think.

Instead of keying in the coordinates, you can try search for the address or place name using the BMW Live and it's the faster and more up to date than the BMW navigation search function.

I would imagine that the garmin sets are better coz they're being updated constantly and has a wider range of POI's for you to choose.

In my opinion, the most up to date gps map out there is waze and it comes with live traffic info. And best of all it's free.

Agree with splee. Waze is the best! And its free!!! Nothing else comes close.

Only problem with waze is its online server based and you need good internet connection when you are searching for a route.
If you're out lost in the gua musang forest (for example) with no internet coverage then you're screwed.

No problems using it in KL. I also like to use it on highways just to know whats ahead of me (major accidents, jams, etc)

Btw BimmerCoder on this forum is probably the best person to talk to regarding the iDrive upgrade if you decide to do it anyway.

Waze is the best that I have used so far. You can always search and pre set the location you are going. Best features for me is it will avoid jammed road and it'll report if there's police.
