im completely new to BMW's and my friend is selling a 1994 525i for $3500 USD, is this a good deal? The exterior is in perfect condition as well as the interior except for a clicking noise coming from the left rear window when i roll it down, The engine and engine bay are very clean and the engine has 200,000 miles on it.also since im new to BMW's im not really sure what my options are when it comes to customizing a 525, are there body kits, rims, and other options available for it?any help is appreciated, thanks a lot

What I can say is please check the local papers over there to see whether its relative cheap or just about right. In Msia, its quite cheap after converting(abt RM 13k) but US is THE cheapest country to buy cars. Might also wanna bring to BMW specialist for full inspection first. The 200k MILES mileage is a worry though. Just my personal opinion lar. Hope it helps. :p

i blue booked the car at 5,900. Where could I purchase one or some of the kits in the pictures you posted

In the US? Sorry, i would have no idea. But if you're keen on online shopping, looking it up on eBay works wonders. Keywords would include E34 Hamann/AC Schnitzer etc.

Do check out my car for some ideas...

infamous,

1994 525i for USD3500 is a reasonable price provided the car is in good condition.

These are the few things that you could do before making your decision:
1) If possible, bring it to a BMW mechanic or dealer to have a check.
2) Ask the seller for maintenance records.
3) Run a CarFax on the VIN number.
4) Get the VIN, and call any BMW dealer to check for the maintenance and recall service records.

And you can get a lot of information by joining this USA BMW Forum.

Hi Inf,

If you are in the US, you need to find a local repair shop that can do the services, if you cannot/don't want to do it yourself. Repair labour is $$$ for sure.

E34 is a nice car, with such high mileage. normal things will break if they have not been replaced in the last 50K miles. Plugs, hoses, water pump, fan belts, brake pads/rotors. Need to understand how to inspect the quality of these parts by physical inspection together with under chassis visual / under engine visual.

If there is an oil leak, then valve cover gasket is the minor issue but head gasket is major $$$. Engine internals are best left untouched as they cost a fair bit.

You need to be sure you really want to get into this. If not, just get a Ford or Chevy of around that price and you would probably spend less in repairs. If you are really lucky, you might be able to own this E34 for a good 2 years without much repair bill. But by then, the book value would be $2000 or less. Your choice.

In the US, if you wanted to get kits fitted, the labour is usually about the price of the items themselves. Painting them will cost extra. Ain't cheap, so be prepared for it. If you are DIY type, it can be a bonanza but you need the dedication and time to do it.
