ghost in the radio hey guys,HELP !!!! my e39 radio seems to have a mind of its own !!!! it is the standard BUSINESS RDS but whenever you start the car, the previous settings are all screwed up !!!! the volume is LOUD !!!! and the Fade / Balance are set to full left and full front . Yes that's right they change while the ignition is OFF !!!! knowing this i would normally off the HU when i turn the car off but upon reignition, the HU would just be on and the tone setting would just be mess-up no matter how i set it the last time. i cant seem to memories any new channels as well, mine just keeps going back to the preset frequency upon removal of the key from the ignition switch.Anybody have any ideas on how to solve this?? Cheers

Firstly, do you have to key in the "password". If you need to that means that the
12VDC power have been switch off when the ignition key is turn to off.

There are two powers connection to the HU. The first one is always ON and the second one is from the ignition key.

Check your fuse box for broken fuse or loose wire. They are usually the main culprit.

If you cannot find any loose connection, remove the HU from the dash box
and check the power to the HU. Usually, there is a small fuse holder to the HU.
Check the fuse and power supply, there should always be supply to the unit.

If you don't have a multi tester, you can use a 12 Volt bulb as a tester.

If there are no supply at the fuse, check the source of the problem at the fuse box
or the connectors.

hey jarance,

thanks for the pointers. i dont have to key in the password everytime i start the car except to adjust the tune setting and balance....anyway i will have it look at by my audio guys today. anyway do you or anyone here has a fuse and relay layout for the e39? is the power to the radio control by one??

jarance,

mind pointing me to the right person to do the job? i was over at a TOP car audio guy and a fellow bmw mech with gt1 and none of them can figure out what the hell is going on.

gt1, sees no code error for the radio, the audio guy checked the constant power wiring to the unit, its there, remote on is there, and he also had a e39 cassette unit with the similar control panel as mine which was left behind at his shop for a try out on my car and the same problem appeared. on removal of key or total engine shut off and restart, the tne settings just get messup and its back to full front and left.....

does the unit with the control panel controls the setting or the lower unit with the radio station and frequency stores the setting?
