Gearbox oil

HI, I hope someone knows the answer or may enlighten me. I drive a E46 318i. I check the handbook and it specifically say i do not need to change gearbox oil, all one has to do is "top up". HOwever, my machenic always tell me to change the oil since i just over 100k km. He says there is no such thing as long life or life time EVEN got oil cooler for gearbox oil. To change the oil, only castrol oil is used and the market price in RM 60 per litre. I just need to confirm whether the oil has to be changed? I do not wan the fact that if i changed, the gearbox ratio or any settings to be altered. I wan to retain factory settings. Also, This is the same arguement i go through with any driver whether the same fully synthetic oil, BMW service centre recommends 25k km whereelse everyone seems to change after 10k km. Do a search and select "Any date" instead of "30 Days" and u shud be able to find something...
