E30 gearbox to change or rebuilt

Hi guys, just got my car back today. Sounds amazing!!!!. No chattering, now whining, just sounds tight and smooth. I think its much better than getting a used box as they are hard to come by. I bought all the parts myself and paid a mechanic with special tools to change the bearings. Fortunely, I didn't have to change the copper gear. Managed to sort out everthing below a thousand. PM me if anyone's looking to to do the same. Will forward you to the right people for the job. It takes only two days.

But a word of caution!!!! due to the bearings being hidden without the possiblity of us checking what's changed, the mech might not change whatever you've given him. That's what happened to me.... sad but true... when I collected the gearbox, I noticed the old and damaged bearings thrown into a box nearby but somehow the nos. weren't correct. It was missing one freaking roller bearing that only cost RM35.00, so I called the boss saying that I wanted all the old bearings that was changed as proof to the old mech (who initially installed my clutch) for the damaged he's done. He rushed back looking a bit shock, acting lost and keep saying that the particular bearing was not spoilt. I told him that I've bought it anyway and should have been installed nevertheless. He then went into his office, dug through his drawers and took the brand new bearing out. Now I'm stuck with one new roller bearing. Its was only 35 bucks and I didn't want to embarress the guy further.

johnathan,

so basically you renewed your clutch and change all the bearing or you rebuild your gearbox?

elwine, I just changed all the bearings in the box and oil seals. The gears probably last a lot longer and according to Leforte's post earlier these gearboxes can usually outstand the life of the car. The only other part that would wear off apart from what I listed is the copper gear, which if not mistaken cost RM350 (not too sure, didn't check as mine was still alright).

BMworks took it out and re-installed them (did an amazing job and reasonably priced), but they didn't have the special tools to change everthing out. I sent it to a specialist at Tmn Sri Gombak who was able to do a great and fast job (really experience in this sort repairs) but you might have to stand there the whole day. Hahaha!

but i notice that the single mass wheels has more problems than the dual mass..

single mass will have problems if you advise people the wrong way! which you always do......

Another piece of info. Wolverine's got a good condition M40 gearbox for sale. Good price too. PM him if anyones interested.

Sorry for digging up an old thread but I've got a similar problem with my manual E30 M40 gearbox as the clacka-clacka chattering and other assorted noises of the existing one is driving me crazy and will one day surely give up its ghost.

So before that happens, I'd like to know of a good place to have it rebuilt or if anyone's selling, at least have another one on standby. If i'm not mistaken, its a Getrag 240.

1st gear kick back to neutral

Recently my 1st gear kick back to neutral quite frequently, and sometime it is difficult to engage into reverse gear also. Any sifu can tell me wat happen?

If you check out leforte's posting earlier, its not due to the clutch that damaged the gearbox but the person that installed it. This has been confirmed by the gearbox specialist when it was opened. The front bearing was completely wreck because the inexperience mech forced the gearbox in, probably with a hammer or something. Apparently, there's some sort of measuring equipment that's required to get it aligned properly before slotting the gearbox shaft into the clutch and flywheel assembly. SO ALL E30 DRIVERS MAKE SURE YOU SENT YOUR CAR TO SOMEONE WHO KNOWS HOW TO GET IT DONE PROPERLY. Its not as simple as you think.

That is very true man. i have to agree with you. i have an e30 as well. looking for a good place for mantainnance of the car. cause the current shop that i went to is rather expensive. Anwyay< i have to ask. I was thinking of changing my gear box. What are the things that i should reconsider? /. cheers mate thanks:top:

THAT's the problem with all our local "smart" mechanic including the few specialist bmw workshop recommended. they all claim to KNOW but do they follow the actual technical procedure and utilizing the proper tools to do the job???? NO... most of them will just go on with their habitual way of doing things, using the wrong procedure ie, those meant for other makes and improper tools. so IF you are lucky, you will be off with a working car but chances are you will not be so lucky, and the aftermath would be a constant return visit to your dear friend for remedies... which in most case, the root of the problem would have already spread like a cancer to other working parts.

a reputable mech is essential but as a supplement i would advise everyone to do a proper research on the internet, for all the proper procedure for the replacement of the particular part before actually venturing to your fellow mech. watch them as they do the work and rest assured, should there be a error in the process you will be there to spot it before it actually causes more damage later...

I am looking for a workshop that can mantain my car performance. e30 318. any idea? the current shop that i went to is benzworld at kelana jaya. but it is expensive. cost me thousand. and sometimes more :top: thanks
