Hi colleaguesI am basically new to this side and please help coz I have doubts and queries regarding with my automatic transmission gearbox. I am driving E46 318i 2.0 (new facelift) for the past 4 years. For your info, last 2 months I've changed my N42 engine to a recond N42 engine.

After changing it, I saw (!) sign at my gearbox and it confirmed its my gearbox faulty. According to the mechanic, I need to change my gearbox as well and it cost me around 6K. I asked 2nd opinion with another mechanic and he said I need to come out with 8K to overhaul the gearbox. Some says that if (!) appears, that means my automatic transmission has converted to 'safe mode' (only up to 3rd gear is available) but I still can drive it till the 5th gear! (although its not so smooth - it jerk sometimes when the gear is changed).

Some says if that the case, maybe the wiring caused it. (it may happened when the 1st mechanic changed the engine) Seriously, I do not know what really caused it and do not know what to do!!! I am afraid I will take a wrong move and will cause me lots of money. If somebody out there knows how to handle this...PLS HELP by replying this mail or leave your contact number in order for me to call you directly. Its better for me to call and discuss.

Zayadi, can you tell us what is the mileage done on your car. It sounds like you may have in excess of 150,000km. In most cases, you should have considered doing a gearbox oil change at the 60,000km or even the 80,000km point. Otherwise, overhauling/re-building it could be a probable option.

It also does not seem like a simple faulty wiring issue, your Gearbox may have just run it's natural life and it's time for a change.

Thanx buddy....could you help to recommend a workshop that can help me on this issue? At least they can check it again before I do the overhauling.

Thanx
ZAYADI

Dear Fahami

That's what I would do. Change ATF, filter and gasket. Only use the recommended ATF.

Thanx guys...I'll try to do the same, hopefully it will help to settle the issue. I really don't want to spend lots of money again after changing the engine.

wow...sound scary on ur engine! I'm not really know much on technical but anyway wish u good luck there!!

looks like merry go round bro ...for a 4 yrs old 1.8 and engine being changed ??

guess the car has taken lotsa abuse ...just guessing ....

just don't believe in some say this and that .... just visit several more workshops ....you may end up finding the solution on the spot ....

Thanx

Zayadi,

Welcome to the forum.

Now about your car. The E46 tranny generally has a lifespan of about 200k km. I have seen at least 4-5 trannys failed at that mileage, common problem is due to the oil pump failure and subsequently damaged the clutch pack and o rings, which then required a complete overhaul. A complete overhaul inclusive of torque converter rebuild will cost you around 8-9k, minus the torque converter should be about 6k.

I would suggest you to bring your car to a competent mechanic that has a proper diagnostic machine like a GT-1. It will be able to read out the actual problem of your gearbox, it could be something small like a solenoid failure or a wiring issue (I doubt that though, since it's all wired into a socket) that triggered the trans-program fault code.

There is a list of workshops that we go to listed in the forum, do a search and hope this helps.

Cheers

Zayadi,

The only place I recommend you to check yr GB is at M-Scope, Batu Caves ...... they give 2 years unlimited mileage warranty on their overhaul work.

Check your gearbox ECU too.
As Mr. President pointed out, get a thorough diagnostics and u will be able to pin point the problem area.

Transmission

I had d same problem too with my E32. Did d same thing as mentioned by tamade7.......

Problem solved after driving a few km.
